Did you go to do the password before you learn of it?
You can actually bypass the entire factory floor section if you know the code is XABY.

i did indeed do it the right way. I'm going to give chrono trigger one final shot tonight. I'm going to try a different controller and see how that pans out.

so here is what happened.
the first key was correct for me even though it was the snes Y (xbox X) key- so i assumed that the x and y were not swapped like the b and a were on the xbox controller. It turns out they are, but apparently the first key doesn't really matter? Apparently whatever button you press first the game will always accept.
I popped in YABY and the door opened. It was all trial and error even though i went through the process. Weird.
gleefully enjoying my game now.

Well there we have it.
I figured it'd be some controller mapping issue.

Well guys, I know this might not be the best place to put this, but I wanted this solution to be on the interwebs SOMEWHERE, so I came here figuring someone's google-quest might lead them here in search for answers (as mine did).
I'm playing Chrono Trigger on snes9x for mac. I just got to the part where the rat tells you the L+R and A 'password'. When I went to do this, the emu apparently wasn't taking the simultaneous inputs. I started seeing the "map 'em all to the same button" solution, but the version of snes9x I'm using doesn't allow for multiple buttons to be mapped to the same key stroke. I was just about to give up and go play something else when I remembered something and came up with a curious solution to try...
I stood my characters directly in front of the console. I went to the Automatic Fire settings and put L, R and A on "inverted input", so that the game would consider them pressed anytime I wasn't pressing them. I exited the menu not expecting much, and....
It worked.

If but one other person finds this solution I'll be happy. I registered just to post this!

4 years... This might be the oldest bump I've seen (despite actually adding good info to the post).
