Games I've finished Pokemon (not sure it fully counts as a RPG though) red and yellow and Super Paper Mario. I usually get fed up with RPGs due to level grinding or some ridiculous quest or the like that tick me off. I've played many but I can't remember them all. Off the top of my head:
FFTA2 (Getting close to finishing)
Twilight Princess (The escort mission with the wagon annoyed to no end and I refuse to finish just because of that)
Countless LoZ games
Phantasy Star II

Like I said, I usually get bored and don't ever come back. One of the problems I have with an RPG is that they take just so long to do anything. Character development and story development are usually pretty slow, often times you can find clunky combat systems that will ruin a game, and sometimes even the art can be annoying. And if any one section is bad, it can ruin the entire experience since I have to invest so much time in it. Why play a 60 hour game when the music's bad, or the art sucks, or you hate the combat? It really takes a good blend of everything to make an RPG really successful in my opinion, and then it really has to try and keep my attention with an interesting story that doesn't lag too much. Every RPG I've ever played has a section I hate, even my favorite one. And if you get stuck at a spot like that...good luck ever getting back to it.racketboy wrote:I'm kinda the same way.Mozgus wrote:The posted results are making realize that something might be wrong with me. I go into every RPG expecting something great, and I'm almost always disappointed and so I don't finish them. There's just something that always lures me into this genre, even though I don't like it much. I tend to just try every one of them I can.
I think it's the repetition and wandering that eventually turn me off.

When I start playing a RPG I always intend to finish it, and although I ended up leaving some games unfinished I'd say I've beaten about 80% or more. Although I like the genre I don't play RPGs often due to the massive amount of time they require, so I'd say I've played something like 30 or 40 RPGs in my life.
By the way, I'm noticing something curious here. Everyone's listing JRPGs and some action-RPGs in between, but I'm not seeing many PC classics. Does anyone here ever played games like Baldur's Gate, IceWind Dale or Planescape Torment?

I noticed that and sort of commented on it. A lot of people seem to think rpg just means JAPANESE rpg. If you want to get really technical, japanese rpgs aren't even rpgs at all. You don't actually role play at all. I honestly wonder sometimes why we even call japanese titles role playing games. I guess it's just for lack of a better term. Games like Mass Effect and Oblivion let you role play, Final Fantasy games do notNebachadnezzaR wrote:When I start playing a RPG I always intend to finish it, and although I ended up leaving some games unfinished I'd say I've beaten about 80% or more. Actually, I forgot Baldur's Gate entirely, and I have issues referring to Mass Effect as an RPG. I think of it more as a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements, kinda like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night isn't a straight up RPG. But I did my best to include a few in my list., like Nox and the two Elder Scrolls titles I've played. I just don't think as many American RPGs made it onto consoles. Most of the ones I mentioned were PC originally, and though a few were eventually ported, most will never see the light of day on a console.
You know, I also forgot Arcanum...interesting little game, that one.

I guess I should've posted my list; about half of the RPGs I've played were on the PC. But I can't argue that there's not a dearth of PC love on these boards... I think my first few posts on this site belabored that exact point, actually. Anyway, here's what I could remember from my western RPGs:NebachadnezzaR wrote:By the way, I'm noticing something curious here. While I've generally beaten the majority of the RPGs I've played, I've noticed that my completion rate for Western RPGs isn't as high even though most of my favorite RPGs are western. I guess that's mostly attributed to growing up and getting internet access. Before I had a PC and especially before I got internet, all I had was the selection at the two video stores we had in town. With a limited selection, and even more limited income, I mostly just bought a game or kept rerenting one and pretty much had to make due.
Not being such a completionist these days helps, too.
