If any DC games were originally ripped under NRG, during the main DC piracy era of 2000-2002, then they were by newbie ripper groups that came and went, leaving us only a few titles. They weren't following the rules.

But again, if Nero NOW works for self-boot titles, then great! Great great great! I'm glad they added support for these mixed disc-types. I just don't want the modern versions of Nero because they take up hundreds of megabytes of space. I can burn my CDs with other 5-10MB apps.

I'm just getting into this stuff last year, but I've had much better luck with Disc Juggler and CDIs. I've never gotten anything to work with Alcohol 120. I've had a few NRG's that work with a boot disc, but not many. Again, I'm a noob and I might be doing something wrong, but I tend to go for the CDI releases.

Once again, flip to the Playstation profile, and it works. Alcohol 120 has the exact same success rate when it comes to burning self-boot DC titles, as DiscJuggler does. It just doesn't have the same success rate at copying already copied DC games. But if you got DJ on your system, it doesn't matter.

I have NEVER had a problem burning games despite which format it was one.

The only problems I've ever ran into have been messed up CUE sheets (for saturn and sega cd games) and corrupt ISO images that had nothing to do with the rip, format or anything but just to do with bad downloading(checked through SFV).

Personally... not to be a dick. But don't blame the format for your ignorance and incompetence.

To verify though; I am not trashing on Alcohol 120 here. People have their preferences in software...

I finally got my DC today and I cannot get any burns to work at all. I downloaded DiscJuggler images and converted them using CDI2Nero. The Dreamcast keeps saying "Please insert a game disc" no matter what I try.

Now some places I have read say you have to mod the dreamcast to play CDR's and other say it should work right out of the box. What is the truth?

Yeah, what did he do? :-\

Most DCs will work with burned games. The rumor about DCs manufactured after a certain date is false. I've had friends who had DCs with dates on their bottoms that read 2002 and they worked fine.

Also, there are two types of self-boot methods. One, audio/data works on most. Later on they found out how to do the data/data method which supposedly has a higher compatibility with the units, unfortunately it's a bit more complicated to implement and to this day, many self-boot tools still use to the audio/data form to be safe. Alcohol 120% can tell you which method each of your games use. Kind of handy to know.

But again, it is true that some DCs will not take copied games at all. I have a friend who can prove it.

So you cannot just put in a burned game and play it, you have to use one of the Self-boot tools? That might explain my problem then heh.

99% of the time, if your downloaded dreamcast game was a .cdi or a .mds/mdf, then it has been self-booted and will work if you burn it in discjuggler or Alcohol 120 under the PLAYSTATION profile.
