yes I am one of the blasphemous. I don't like Sonic 2 all that much. 3 locked with S&K merely beats Sonic CD due to it's awesome length and good use of Super Sonic. Where as Sonic CD is just awesome. I love the soundtrack and really odd level designs. I can replay Sonic CD the most of all of them.

I'd love to see Sonic3/S&K remade with CD quality soundtrack like Sonic CD.
lol -- Sonic 1 and Spinball over 2? What don't you like about 2?

I love Sonic 1 for nostalgic reasons. My first video console I owned that was "mine" was the Sega Genesis. All we had before that was the NES and ColecoVision from a tag sale. Both of which I didn't get to play much, nor did I like much.

Sonic 1 was "my" game, and in a house full of as many kids as my house, that meant a lot. I played the HELL out of that game. I worked my balls off for that Sega Genesis and copy of Sonic 1. It was my 8th birthday and I spent it from 6AM to 6PM cleaning the horse/cow stalls, chicken coop, cutting timber, cleaning the house, etc. Then finally my dad came home and told me to empty the groceries. I pouted and pouted proclaiming I worked my ass off all day on my very own birthday. He just smacked me up side the head and said finish bringing in the groceries. When I got out to the cadi and popped the trunk there was my very own Sega Genesis... I about shat myself. Or maybe I did. Anyways, now that there... that's nostalgia.

Sonic Spinball on the other hand was one of the first games I actually purchased with my own cash (yes I'm younger then you Racket). Sonic CD was another game I purchased with my own cash as well. They both consumed mass amounts of my gamin time. Sonic 2 mostly sat at my dads house and got played by my sisters.

But Sonic 2... ermmm... I don't know what it is about the game. Well first off the day I got Sonic 2 is very over shadowed by some nostalgia for my brother. I got it for Christmas, my mother did the usual, you know books, socks, new school clothes. Stuff I actually loved to tell you the truth (I was that easy to please kid when it came to Xmas). And my mum got my brother Ian and I one special gift. After opening all our presents I didn't find that copy of Sonic 2 anywhere, and I had one gift left in this GIANT ass box. It wasn't gonna be Sonic2... so I was kinda bummed, but whatever. So I went and opened my last box and had to climb into a pit of styrofoam peanuts to locate the gift. All the way at the bottom I found Sonic 2... I come jumping out of the box elated as no other to have Sonic 2 and arose from the peanuts to witness my brother opening his gift.

My brother was the cutest little psychopath through out his life, and here he was pulling open a little envelope with a small tinker bottle attached to it. In his very poor reading skill (he was only in kindergarten) he read out loud:

"Ian, your present was the most moving gift I've ever had to make for any boy or girl. And I made a point to collect it up for you on my way to your home. So as I was gliding through the sky I reached out and collected you your very own 'cloud' from the heavens and stored it in this bottle. One thing you might not know though is that clouds are actually made of water, and before I could get it to your home it had already turned back to water. But I bet your mommy will know how to turn it back into a cloud."

signed Santa

My mom told me to bring Ian to the kitchen and show him how to make a cloud. So we boiled the water and watched the steam blow out the window as Ian waved good bye to his very own cloud.

It still makes me cry today...

and thusly, Sonic 2 feels like a bitter present in comparison to the most creative and beautiful thing I've ever seen.

[edit]
I could also get into gameplay reasons as well, but I've said enough.

Hm. My votes:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 2
Sonic CD
Sonic 1
Sonic Rush

Sonic Rush is good, but...the level design just isn't up to par. Bottomless pits and blind jumps like whoah.

Damn, Lordofduct. That's quite a story there. When's the autobio coming out cuz I wait to read the rest of the story. Really like the Ian's story. I might steal that one for my future children. :P Anyway, did you live on a farm or something man??? I thought it was busy as hell there living the farmer's life so how you get the time to play game.

Back on topic. I only play Sonic 1 and 2 and CD. So I like Sonic CD, Sonic 1, and then Sonic 2. Since everyone is raving about Sonic 3 with the Knuckles add on, I might have to find myself a copy to see what all the hubub is about.

I'd say:

S&K + 3 (because that's even how Yuji Naka said that's how it was originally supposed to be a complete game)
Sonic CD
Sonic Rush
Sonic 2
Sonic Spinball

Sonic 1 was fun in it's day but it's just too damn slow for me now w/o the spin start.

5. Sonic Rush - Probably beat out Sonic 3 just because I've played it much more recently

4. Sonic & Knuckles - Same old Sonic I knew and loved with a pretty creative cartridge feature that squeezed that little bit of extra life out of my old Sonic games

3. Sonic CD - Same old Sonic I knew and loved. Beats out S&K just because the sound track is far superior.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog - First one I played so the lack of spindash wasnt an issue for me. Great level designs and very memorable music and boss battles.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - This beats out all other Sonic games in my books mainly because of Tails being invincible. The level design was amazing, the music was superb, the bosses and enemies where flawless and the new 3-D bonus stages in the halfpipes were unforgettable.... but all that aside I was just happy to have a game that I could let my younger brother play with me and not worry about him stealing my lives once he ran out of his own or bitching that I wouldnt let him play with me.

A lot of people cant play Sonic 1 without the spindash, but I find that without it, there's a certain charm to being forced to get good running starts, utilizing even the slightest of downslopes and such. Sonic 1 was all about gaining acceleration steadily, which somehow made you appreciate the higher speeds when you were able to reach them.

I remember that when I played it originally way back in the day. But if you get hit in a area that's really hard to build up speed, it really takes the speed and fun out of the game for me nowadays~

My grandparents had the farm. I basically spent my entire child hood on it (they lived just down the street). The house I grew up in was an old farm house as well... but we only had some pigs and the sort there. Oh and an evil horse that my sister got for a birthday... bastard ran me over once and broke a couple ribs. Grrrrrrrr

Oh and I will tell you, you probably wouldn't want to hear my autobiography. Although after this one bizarre night with my brother Tobin in Deltona Florida, we decided we wanted to and were gonna call it "A Finger Painted Portrait of an American Family". We opted out though when we assumed we probably would piss off a lot of people doing it, some of whom aren't the kind of people you want to piss off.

Sonic 1
Sonic CD
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Knuckles Chaotix

Am I allowed to include KC, even though there is no Sonic? I know lots of people hate it, but I love the slingshot mechanic...a very cool twist for me.

I've played all the handheld Sonic games but I don't really get into them. Sonic Rush was okay...very fast but very frustrating later in the game.
