If Nintendo added an "upscaling chip" it would be the same effect as the TV doing the upscaling itself, really. You'd have to bump up the 3D hardware so that it could natively handle the higher resolution, and that would require a bit of a hardware redesign. I do not foresee a Wii v.2.0.
Makes a lot sense. So, an upscaling chip would be redundant with the one in the tv? How does this differ from fancy upscaler boxes?
So, what does Wii look like on a big (50 inch plus) LCD? I'm planning on getting one soon and Wii is my only "next" gen console. Yes, I would like to get a PS3 soon but probably not until a price drop.
I have a 40inch Panasonic Viera and it looks great. No complaints at all. Even the old VC titles look sharp and crystal clear on it (running in 576i I think).
If you have a decent HDTV or a decent upscaler (IE a stand alone receiver that doesn't cost less than half the amount you paid for you TV) you will be satisfied with the Wii running in component.

No jaggies? Or, image stretching or distortion from 4:3 to 16:9
So, how necessary is the upscaler if you have a really good tv?
Depends on the upscaler in the TV. Some TVs are simply better at upscaling than others, regardless of price. The Panasonic Vieras are well known for having extremely good upscalers for the price.
I get no jaggies in any 2d game on the Wii. There is jaggies in the N64 games but that's because there's no antialiasing, thats nothing to do with the TV though.
