This is only true in the US. In Japan it was the Dreamcast that killed Sega. In the US the Saturn, and the behavior of Sega of America, foreshadowed the death of Sega.

I wasn't gaming much at the time DC came out. I kind of took a break after the Genny until I bought the original XBox. I now am going back to that late 90's/early 2000's period with recently buying a DC and a N64. I'm really enjoying both. The DC is nice because I can easily download much of the library without feeling guilty since it's been long dead. I enjoy the DC much more than my PS2 because of it's quirky games. It's too bad that the few games that have trickled out since it's death have all been shooter types. I like sports games as well and am pleasantly surprised at how well the games were back then.

The Dreamcast wasn't so much a revolutionary system as an evolutionary one, but it was quite a step of evolution. The DC can easily produce graphics to rival the PS2, Xbox, and GC. It can't top their best, but it can match their middle ground. And considering when the hardware was designed and how, at the core, simple the hardware design is, that's pretty impressive. Part of that, though, is due to the PowerVR graphics core. PowerVR uses a geometry model which should have been continued rather than passed over by simple triangle geometry. There's something to be said for infinite planes.

I have to seriously wonder that if the Dreamcast had survived longer and had continued development how its best could have stacked against the best of PS2 and GameCube. The PS2 especially has had the benefit of years and years of development and refinement which can produce games not even conceivable when the hardware was new. I think further development on the Dreamcast could have netted much more impressive things than we have seen from its shortened lifespan. For an example, look at some of the incredible games that came out for the Saturn just before it was killed, absolutely stunning stuff compared to what was available when the Saturn was first launched.

What killed the Dreamcast? Bernie Stolar, plain and simple and he should be doing time in prison for being such a raging moron without even the business sense of a baboon (though he kind of looks like one).

Scooter's right, the end of a lifespan for a console almost always produces its best visuals. Dreamcast wasn't around nearly long enough for us to get a good sense of what it was capable of, though I don't remember the technical specs(I know, they're posted on Wikipedia). I don't really know if it would have had too much effect on what games would have been released, but I'm sure we'd have a few more Shenmues if it had stayed around.

I think Shenmue's dev costs are what spelled the end of Shenmue, not the death of the Dreamcast.

I wish I could ban the word Shenmue from these forums. Everytime I hear the name it hurts so much that I am reminded that I will probably never see a third game to wrap up the series.
