Sega CD 2 rev.1 (silver ring spindle) Samsung SOH-04T
Sega CD 2 rev. 2 (all black spindle) Sony KSS210A, Sony KSS220A
hope this helps some.
Just opened up my sega cd this morning, did more cleaning now it can read my original game but not backups. They were burned at a slow speed and worked on emulator so I'm gonna try one of the more expensive brands to see if they work. Found a store that sells them:

If the experiment fails I'll buy a new lens and post a follow up.

Its about time I revive my own thread to do a follow up on reviving my model 2 SegaCD unit.

I bought the KSS-150A lens and replaced the SOH0T4 about a year ago and after installation the motor doesn't spin the disc at all so I got frustrated about it and stored it away. Now that I'm on the fix anything I can mood again need some more help from you guys.

The lens just moves up and down but the motor doesn't move at all, what steps would you take and what should I look for. Need exact details please.

Here's a video and some pics

Ok, I had a suspicion, so I opened up my SCD to try. The bad news is its probably just something dumb why it doesn't appear to be working. The good news is your SCD is probably fixed.

The lens moves up and down to check for a disc, but if it doesn't see a reflection, it won't spin up. I tried no disc, mine did the same thing, just the laser moving up and down. I put a disc on the spindle and put a circular magnet to hold it down (which is what that floating disc in the lid is for and it took a second for the disc to spin up.

So either find a magnet or some non nasty tape to stick a disc down and try, or drop the cover on and check. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip, but with the cover on the disc doesn't either so its gotta be something else.

I really appreciate taking your time to open yours up and help out, you are turning into the resident tech guy.

I'm not giving up yet, been reading this thread over at sega-16 forums and read some similar problem but I have about 30 pages more to go. So far there's a slight probability that the motor is dead, but it seems it doesn't happen that often so I will check once more for connections and possible bent wires that are preventing it to work properly.

There is also someone suggesting that a bad ac adapter without enough power could be the cause and the weird thing is I didn't notice before that there is an almost unnoticeable humming coming from mine when plugged. And now to my surprise it doesn't power up, that's it for today.

Yeah, a bad power supply will be noisy. Ah well, hopefully that's it. Sucks that you can't use a generic multi-voltage power pack to test because they don't put out enough amperage. Most top out at 300 mA and the SCD wants 1.2 A (1200 mA).

What I did was test my model 1 genesis and it works fine with the adapter. I was checking for voltage continuity and found I blew the fuse on the sega cd, so I soldered a temporary wire to bypass the fuse and it powers up again.

Having the unit alive again tested a few things. I turned the white gear by hand to move the lens away from the spindle and when I power on it moves back but stays there.

One motor moves the lens while the other one spins the discs, right? I tried checking voltage on this spots but there isn't any.

Is there any other spots I can check to narrow this down?

Hmm I can check mine, but a bit much going on right now. Maybe when the weekend rolls around I'll check mine with the multimeter.
