Skies of Arcadia not cliche?
Re: Skies of Arcadia not cliche?
I thought the ship battles were a really awesome idea, and they should have expanded more on it. I never though the game was cliche, and kiddy/anime RPGs really piss me off. One thing I always though, it some how reminds me of FF7. Maybe because you fight huge weapons, but I thought there was something else...

Well, if Sega can do one thing really, REALLY well (particularly in their RPG's), it's create an ambiance. Skies of Arcadia excels at this. The feeling of piloting your airship accross the infinite skies is truly incredible. It finds this groove and sticks to it perfectly. It doesn't ever stray from this very well-executed sense of focus. The characters - I've seen them before in a cartoon somewhere, I'm sure, but they carry the story and the ambiance very well. The story's quite good, too. It's so cinematic that you can literally play it in front of your family and they'll be pulled into it, but it's actually fun to play as well. While Final Fantasy games have very rich, involving stories, they don't hold a crowd's attention for very long.
Just as more people are prone to stop and watch a cartoon halfway through than a live-action PG-13 movie. Its just much more inviting, and entertaining to everyone even though they may feel childish at times.
So strange that the same company produced the Phantasy Star series. Gotta love Sega.

Yeah, I think most RPGs storylines are cliched. I loved SoA for trying some new settings tho. I mean most of the game takes place in the sky on a ship. I loved finding all the discoveries, I loved the huge ship battles (in fact I'd deliberately get into them)... My only complaint really was the amount of random battles got to be a bit much after awhile. Oh and I loved that the main character turned out to be a total pimp. You think he's going to shack up w/ one girl or the other but nope, he takes em both. ... At least that was MY take on the ending.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games
