I read the back...imagine if I went by word of mouth...the only game I'd know about is Halo....*shudder*
Seriously....kids in my school...thats ALL they talk about.

Words of mouth, huh? It's bad grammer, but thats my vote. Second would be playing it and watching youtube videos. i usually do all of the above.

Tend to go the sum of a lot of things:
-for the professional reviews because there are too much biased user reviews around, unless it comes from people from this or similar forums :D
-game in action from videos be it youtube or video reviews
-try before buy... sorry for my piracy, i'm poor this is my first option
-word of mouth from friends
-never go for the back of the box... developers always think they made the best game ever.

on the long run sometimes read bad reviews, get awful word of mouth and find games that I love, so trust your instinct once in a while.
