The 7th Saga is weird, overly long, and brutally difficult with shit localization. It also has great monster designs, a brilliant one or two-member party system, a lovely OST, and a palpably melancholic atmosphere. I love it.
Xak is the best ARPG series no one plays. Brilliant implementation of the "bump system" and god-tier OSTs. Xak I + II (PCE) is something I'd rank alongside Ys Book I & II, Link to the Past, SoM, and Terranigma.
Lastly, there's Seiya Monogatari (again for the PCE). I'd say this is analogous to Chrono Trigger or Phantasy Star IV. The best JRPG for the system and one of the best JRPGs overall, ever.

Also, Xak OST...better than Lagoon's?

prfsnl_gmr and I will go to our graves singing the praises of Epic Dumpster Bear. And I will go to my grave singing the praises of Buck Bumble, Devil's Third, and the entire Army Men series.

Unsung (in the US) = Grandia. Yes, the US Playstation release was flawed (in several ways, but more than anything else the English voice work), and yes, the Gung Ho PC/Switch release as Grandia HD has some of those flaws still included (but thankfully English text and Japanese voices are an option). But Grandia is one of those fantastic tales that combines adventure with the protagonists growing up and coming of age. No, the story doesn't REALLY do anything horribly unique, but the way it tells that tale is just so unabashedly enthusiastic and committed to the characters. And the combats are awesome, if not especially challenging outside of boss battles (unless you've been dodging battles and get back-attacked while under-leveled, then you might be screwed). I know I'm the only one here who appreciates this game to this degree, but I know some of you would love it if you're able to give it a chance.

I'm loving everything I'm seeing in this thread
Note : Shining Force II
I also unabashedly love Shining Force II. When I went to college I made friends with a bunch of guys who all loved jRPGs, and we'd nerd out all the time talking about FFIII, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, and the like. I remember at the time not thinking much of the Genesis's library, but one of my closest buddies kept telling me I had to play Shining Force II. I finally got it going on an emulator (in the very early days of emulation), and I remember being stunned that the Genesis had a jRPG of that quality on it. As a diehard SNES guy, it definitely caused me to revisit some of my opinions about the Genesis. Years ago I wrote what I felt was a fairly gushing piece about it for GameSpite, so hopefully that cleared up any of my bad Genesis karma.
PretentiousHipster : Nightmare Ned
I'd never heard of this game or the show it's based on, so I looked it up and almost immediately found a screenshot that looks like an adorable little cartoon kid getting his brain punched out of the back of his head. I'm gonna need to find a way to play this...
ElkinFencer10 : Devil's Third
Yeah, everybody should love Devil's Third
Ack : Weapon Lord
That does sound pretty cool. I've actually never played WeaponLord, but I guess now I have to.

It's so bad, but it's like Steven Segal's movies bad. It's the best possible kind of bad.ZRofel wrote:ElkinFencer10 : Devil's Third

One Must Fall: 2097
A DOS fighting game with some light RPG elements sounds like a disaster yet it's one of my favorite fighting games of all time.

Me too, everything you said applies to how I feel about it. If the platforming was just a little tighter I think it would be much more fondly remembered. It's one of the few NES games I beat when I was little. If Rare's name were more prominently displayed on the front instead of that LJN rainbow I think it would have been given more of a chance.noiseredux wrote:A Nightmare On Elm Street is legitimately one of my favorite NES games of all time. Not in a so-bad-it's-good way. I actually think it's a way better game than people realize because they give up on it too quickly. The music is amazing, the fact that every level has two versions (dream and awake versions), the switching between characters to utilize different jumps and weapons, and the fact that it has 4-player co-op are all selling points.
