Aeternoblade. It’s a fun metroidvania game with some cool mechanics, and I really enjoyed playing it. (I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I played through it twice t9 get the true ending!). The graphics are mostly just brown and grey, however, and most of game is just plain ugly. The awkward PS1-style pre-rendered cutscenes don’t help it, and neither do the strangely rendered characters with their too small baby faces.

How about RE 1 and Silent Hill on PSX?
I think the RE1 bad graphics and clunky controls add to the horror experience, kind of like watching a horror movie on VHS. But Not sure about Silent Hill, have not played it, but looks pretty bad.

Do you think there is a reason N64 graphics aged worse than PSX? I would say PSX 3D graphics looked worse.

I actually love the N64 look, maybe its nostalgic for meAck wrote:Dungeon Keeper ain't that bad. At least not when I compare it to the likes of Dark Rift or War Gods on Nintendo 64. I realize we have had plenty of discussion on how the N64 has aged, but those two look particularly bad to me.

FFVII graphics and art style looks attractive to me(considering the graphics power of the system), the graphics looks on par with other 3D rpg games released from the era. Was it criticised for bad graphics on launch?BoneSnapDeez wrote:Final Fantasy VII is downright appalling. Nomura's design + early PS1 graphics. Stunningly bad.
This one is truly horrible.Anapan wrote:Not gonna mention Atari 2600 games because of the limitations the creators had to work with.
A couple of PC games come to mind.
Morraff's Dungeons of the Unforgiven which had high-res svga ability but ....
Is this the one on the Switch? A modern game with worst graphics, I didn't see that coming.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Aeternoblade. Most games that used 3D models on pre-rendered backgrounds just make my eyes bleed today. It's made even worse by modern displays.

Aeternoblade is on the Switch! I played the 3DS version, however. I still recommend it. Like I said, I played through it twice without skipping a beat, and it’s a very solid action-oriented metroidvania. Ugly as sin, though!

I'll admit, I nearly began playing through Aeternoblade on my plane ride back to Japan when I finished Shantae: Pirate's Curse, but I watched the intro movie and was like "actually no, I'm gonna not play any more video games during this trip"prfsnl_gmr wrote:Aeternoblade is on the Switch! It’s hideous, right?!
EDIT: You should stil give it a shot someday, though.

Cloud does look horrendous in FF7 and I can’t stand Mass Effect Andromeda’s facial and hair designs. These are the 2 for me.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

This is a tough topic, I can say just about every 3d ps1 game looks terrible in hindsight but I was blown away by the graphics when they were new. I remember playing metal gear solid and thinking games can't look much better than this.
I'm sure there is a low budget indie game out there that I thought looked terrible but turned out to be a lot of fun, I'm just not thinking of it right now

PSX 3D did not age well, but I would say a lot of it was tolerable and the artist style was pleasing. I just would like to know what made these games look "realistic" at the time and terrible now. It is the same image. I think part of it was because we were comparing this 3D realistic look to the cartoony 2D platformers of the SNES. The prior generation was not aiming at anything close to real life at all.pook99 wrote:This is a tough topic, I can say just about every 3d ps1 game looks terrible in hindsight but I was blown away by the graphics when they were new. Although I do remember games having bad/bland graphics at release of which are Alone in the Dark and GTA San Andreas(not bad in itself, but terrible of a ps2 generation graphics).

I have to say that low-poly is an art style in itself, and the companies that employed the best artists excelled. As games aged, there was the transition from low to high that was swapped out as the camera approached. Being born in the 80's I always tried to experience and understand the best that was available, and in 1991 when this came out it was Interactive 3D when every other computer only played pre-rendered vector playback demos. This could be played on mostly everyone's PC computer
3D VR experience - like the future Grand Theft Auto experience but not good enough to be a game.
