Sure, it's inconvenient, but it's hardly an insurmountable obstacle.

It is a stupid and unprofessional obstacle however and unworthy of Nintendo's previous efforts. How we buy things today is the only real voting we have left and I personally refuse to reward companies for treating their customers with contempt.

I think "contempt" might be a little strong. Sure, it was short-sighted, but malicious? That's ridiculous. Also...isn't it kind of a moot point? The whole "vote with your dollar" thing doesn't really apply well to a system that was discontinued almost two years ago.

When a company tells itself that it doesn't have to fix a crippling problem like this: that it can just do better next time and the fans will forget all about it (as most appearance have), that is contempt. Would be like if Microsoft HAD NOT done the extended warranty on the XBox 360 after all the Red Ring of Death problems.

This is the same logic that enables Apple to abuse its customers today.

You're being over dramatic. The WiiU they gave up on years ago before even the Switch popped up, and it had its problems right down to the terrible OS and lag it has even after the fixes, but to say what they did was malicious is just drama queen behavior. Fine be pissed off their discontinued junk out of the box console never was cured of all its problems, that's ok, but to lay it down on them the next time around seems overly emotional and bitter which is mostly unnecessary. I'd go by the deeds of what is happening now with a successful system, not one they released that bombed a year within it came out they got stuck into stringing along. I know it's kind of an excuse to just say ignore it, but it is a dead system. Nintendo has always had asinine hoops around their paranoia so this HDD mess is nothing new, just another annoying hoop, but you can do as he said even if it is annoying. You can't be seriously thinking they should do as MS did on the 360 and do an extended warranty over that, especially with the system being dead while the other was during the system life. At this rate either find a work around or get rid of the pos (like I did years ago) and be better off for it.

Nintendo is a more traditional games company. That’s their bread and butter because, well that’s what they do. Whatever the issues we’re from a hardware and software perspective was more about inexperience than any malicious intent.

Personally I’ve never ran into these problems. I have a Y-cabled SSD in an external housing. No errors whatsoever.

Crippling is a bit of an exaggeration as well. The system still worked regardless of any memory issue. Crippling is having the console bricked from and update. Microsoft did the three year extension to its warranty because that was crippling, both as PR nightmare and regulatory issues. Microsoft was in the news at the time from antitrust regulators in the EU. Class action lawsuits were at the ready as well. Two different cases. Apples to watermelons.

Nintendo was kind of in a weird place at the time of the Wii U’s release. They didn’t know how to follow up to the success from the Wii. They’ve made mistakes sure but they’ve learned from it. And that’s why the Switch was a success.

If you don’t want to rewards companies with you’re money because of X and Y reasons then sure, it’s your money. But by the looks of things, seem like your rolling them up with companies like GM where a malicious action cost the lives of 124 people, at the minimum.

Contemptuous and Malicious are not the same thing. I don't think Nintendo intended on making it suck this bad, they just didn't care to make it right after it did. As for the the numbers of problems, you don't have to look very far into "160-...." searches to see that this was a very common problem. They honestly should have offered a buy-back/recall. Look at all the Switch (and even 3DS consoles with screen-scratches that were not fixed for free). As someone who's been in tech since 8" floppies were a thing, I can tell you it only gets worse from here. When a company can stiff you for a $200-$300 lemon and you come back for more, you are legitimizing bad ethics.

Say what you will about Genesis/SegaCD/32x and Saturn, these things are still running today (The Saturn being one of the most dependable Disc-Based devices of all time - many being over 20 years old and still reading great).

Done talking about this. Fanboys cannot be reasoned with.

Listing Sega consoles only seems fanboyish ehh?

Plenty of Nintendo consoles and handhelds still run flawlessly today. Take your pick.

Shit, my Atari Lynx is still kicking around. It’s a battery guzzling thing but still.

Sure I’m a fanboy - of video games. Life is too short to stick with one console or company. But it sounds like you’ve got some underlying issues with Nintendo or something.

I mean, I'm no expert, but this certainly seems like something an unreasonable fanboy would say.

This really does seem to be something you're blowing way out of proportion though. Just because the Wii U can't be used with every external memory format under the sun, and is even quite bad at some of them, which Nintendo themselves make no secrets about, that makes it an unusable piece of equipment worthy of a recall? Worthy of a recall almost 2 years after it's been made obsolete? O.o

Pretty much does come off that way at a base level at least. Attack Nintendo for being as bad as Apple, GM, whatever else of total contempt lists like EA -- then take their age old competitor as an example of high quality standards and creating goods that last. The company who on a console side introduced us to a consistent world in the 90s of both throwing out useless high priced accessories with questionable to dismissive (32x) support, but also when something went foul (Saturn) the result was to give up, and also wipe the slate clean dispatching the Genesis and Game Gear which were making money along with it tossing millions under the bus. The Saturn and the SCD have been having problems perhaps not yet wide scale but with plastic cogs, belts, cracking belts, laser issues. I'd put a Gamecube up against any disc based system before or after for a test of durability many online (though unprofessional) tests have shown in being able to take a hell of a lot of abuse and work.

You call fanboy but ignore evidence, cherrypick which works, then call out everyone who won't agree with you. That IS a fanboy, or at least the evidence of a delusional mind.

Hell even the admin there has a good point, let's talk to Sega about their caps issue. How many Nintendo handhelds from the 80s and 90s still work compared to Sega, in particular over both cap issues but also to be fair, screen related failures. Hell the Sega system is as lousy as the NEC TE/GT for screen and caps, and the Lynx it's somewhere in the middle. I may have started on Nintendo but I branched into Sega, NEC, SNK, and Sony -- not much loyalty here anymore given if the Switch were a console i would not have bought it after the Wii/WiiU branding issues over that miserable decade of issues.
