Ignoring the fact the PS4 has an established library, I'd put it down to game preference and lifestyle choice. I'd also secondarily if you have a half decent computer with a solid video card put it out there your home computer/laptop could do a better job with the same better games the PS4 gets anyway (outside of Sony exclusives.)
Since you live in the fantasy of moving to NYC still with years of people taking jabs on here, it would almost make more sense to just risk the Switch. You'd be able to dock it at home, take it to a roof top hipster party like that original dumb promo ad Nintendo did, and take it on the subway as you noted too. SO what if it's weaker undocked? You do realize that's more anti-Nintendo spin than fact in how it reacts in the real world. The games themselves don't slow down, play worse, or lose features. They just don't run in 1080p which much of that added processing power had been going to. You may lose a few finer details, much like a lesser computer video card will do at 60fps vs a higher tier video card would at the same speed. Minor sacrifices but not in quality, just smaller attention to non-essential details.
Mind you if you're not big on Nintendo franchises, the Switch wouldn't make as much sense as just getting a shield tablet at this rate either which would get the same job done docked (with a mini-hdmi to hdmi cable) or in your hands other than needing to lug around a bluetooth controller (while it's attached to Switch.)
I'm not advocating either, just saying to think about what you're wanting out of it. I'm retiring my PS4 currently as I sold off the last of my games. Sony doesn't make anything I want anymore, and the games I do want for it, came out in better shape on my computer. But if I had a weaker computer, then I'd totally keep the gaming going on the thing so it's nothing against the system either. At least with the Switch you have that odd form factor and its exclusives which won't hit the PC at all from their IP farm most people enjoy in some form or another.
Is the Switch worth putting off getting a PS4?
Re: Is the Switch worth putting off getting a PS4?
Well, I've been weighing my options and while I've heard plenty of reasons why I should put off getting the Switch, I've heard plenty of reasons to get the Switch.
With the Switch, I'd have the latest Zelda game, a Binding of Isaac port that is actually better than the Vita version I have, Sonic Mania, Mario Kart 8 on the go, Splatoon 2 (never played Splatoon 1 but I've heard good things) and more.
But I've heard that waiting to get it is the best bet, so now I'm focusing on getting the Switch no sooner than after my birthday (July 9th, the day I turn 31). By then the library of titles I'm interested in will have increased two- to threefold, regardless of whether or not the Virtual Console hits the Switch.
I'm just hoping that if they DO drop the price after I buy it, they roll out an Ambassador Program. I mean, the 3DS did that and I missed out on having Metroid Fusion (or was it Zero Mission?) on the 3DS. So either I plunk down $300 and get some exclusive titles down the road or miss out on such titles but pay less money on the console.
I've heard that I'll be working up to six nights a week, though I'd start off 3 nights a week on my new job. Assuming I end up working dinners, I'd either keep my old job and work breakfast shifts or work lunch and dinner shifts at my new job.

You could send me $300 and call it even. Just a suggestion.

If you're not super chomping at the bit, I'd wait until the holiday season. That would give you a little more time to save (maybe even save enough to get a PS4 AND a Switch), and they'll probably have a Zelda bundle then. I've also heard rumors that Sony is planning a one day PS4 Pro price drop to compete with the Switch launch if that says your decision.

If I'm able to get a Switch it'll only be because it didn't interfere with me being able to move to NYC.
And if I'm able to do both, I'd like to get one after my birthday (July 9).
By then Sonic Mania will be out and I also wanna get Binding of Isaac Afterbirth + and the new Zelda (natch). Also Splatoon 2 and Steamworld Dig 2.

And how many years have you been on and on about NYC and never doing it? I lost track how far the forum regs giving you crap over it goes. Just give it in, if you want a Switch it's not going to stop you from going somewhere you can't afford, secretly don't want to move to, or just love trolling up a story for attention over.

REPO: if I'm honest with you I would not get a Switch simply because I really wouldn't want to mess around with something like that on the train.
I work in NYC and take the subway to go to certain places during lunch and I can tell you it's best to leave electronic things like that out of sight. Something new like the Switch where there's a high demand is something that can get taken pretty quickly. I remember people getting robbed of their Beats headphones and their iPhones right when the subway doors were about too close. It was all over the news for a while.
I would choose the PS4 for pricing purposes. If you want something for portable use to make the time go by while you're on mass transit I probably get something cheaper. If you want Zelda, get a cheap Wii U. Refurbish ones go for $200 from Nintendo direct.

Neither, Repo. Save your money. Play the games you already own. Work hard. Spend little.
Who am I kidding? You won't listen.

I'd get a PS4 because it's a better Blu-Ray player than the one I currently have. And I bet if I'm streaming Amazon Video (don't have Prime yet), the quality won't drop to SD as much (happened when I streamed the new Power Rangers film last week). And a few of the Vita titles I own came with the PS4 versions. And there's PlayStation Now.

Like a portable-ized Raspberry Pi? I've been thinking about it for a while, but still trying to figure out how to do the controls. A dedicated hotkey (I use Recalbox and I can map the hotkey to the Xbox button) is a must. And do I do a six face buttons with two shoulder buttons or four face and four shoulder?

If I get a a WiiU, I'm softmodding it like I did my Wii (which got killed by flood water during the last major hurricane and is now in material possession heaven with damn near all my books and a huge chunk of my games). That way I can load it up with backups. But not for emulation. That's what my to-be-portable-ized Pi is for.
