It does, and some of the puzzles in the optional dungeons are incredibly difficult. (You can play through game without going through all of those, however.) That said, it's also one of the most charming games I have ever played, and I still have to recommend it.

I bought this yesterday, and I am really looking forward to playing it. (It is only $4.99 on iOS right now.) The publisher also released Across Age, another well-reviewed LoZ/Ys clone, and its sequel. Have any of you played those?

Although it was published by the same company that published Oceanhorn, I think it was developed by the team that works on a lot of the boldly generic, 16-bit RPG throwbacks that Kemco releases on mobile platforms these days. That is not necessarily a bad thing, and one of the reviews I read reference both LoZ and Ys. I have been trying to reduce the number of games on my iPad, but if it goes on sale, I will have to get it.

I 100% agree with this on everything I've seen. Time and desire to start it is the only reason I haven't grabbed it yet but I will once a sale tempts me enough.

That other one Across Age I think it's just a shared publisher, looks like a generic moble RPG/ARPG style thing going on there, kind of like KEMCO is the JRPG blow out kings of mobile.

I have several Zelda-likes that I really enjoyed, but I find that most of them end up aping the 3D entries as opposed to 2D. Beyond Good & Evil, Okami, Star Fox Adventures (no, really!), Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, Darksiders, 3D Dot Game Heroes, there's a few good ones out there.

Older systems don't seem to nail it down quite as much, but there's still obviously excellent ARPGs out there. Beyond Oasis and Crusader of Centy on Genesis are solid, for example, and we all know about the Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma triumvirate. (And yes, I know you burned out on Terranigma, Ex.)

Oh, and if Okami wasn't paced well enough for you, I'd recommend checking out its spinoff / sequel Okamiden on DS. That was a ton of fun, and way better than I ever expected to be, even if it did trade off a lot of spectacle.

But really, there's a ton more non-linear action-platformers in the indie space right now (i.e. Metroidvania), but not nearly enough Zelda-likes. Although I suspect that's because Zelda-style games might be even more difficult to craft, and that seems to have always been the case, honestly.

I guess the irony is that I don't generally like Zelda clones much. Zelda is that sacred thing for me. Even if Nintendo put out crap on a system I'd buy it for Zelda alone. Zelda has me by the balls. Most imitators just fall flat for me.

Beyond Good & Evil - it's been too long, I remember liking it (my friend made me play it as he watched haha). Think we beat it but I can't remember anything other than it's cool setting. Oh hey Ubisoft still claims they're making 2!

Star Fox Adventures - loved it, but holy macaroni... it's so easy you don't even have to try.

I tried to get into Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, but just couldn't do it. And I usually like the weirder Japanese stuff (Nier anyone?), this one just didn't click though. The combat and controls seemed bad. The catapult thing was annoying haha. Didn't get far.

Probably blasphemes to say but I've never felt that interested in Okami. I know I need to check it out myself sometime though.

3D Dot Heroes was legit. Very tough though! Seemed like one of From Software's last obtuse game before they struck gold with Dark Souls.

Everyone is mostly bringing up 3D Zelda-esque stuff though, so we don't always see many games replicating the overhead style. I want to check out Golden Axe Warrior sometime. So yeah I think that makes this look pretty fresh. I always say around here I'm extremely peculiar and picky when it comes to indie games, but this game looks like it's literally pulling from Link to the Past's sprite set directly haha. That's how you can sell me. It looks legit SNES. Definitely going to keep my eye on it.

I used to feel the same way about Zelda, but after Majora's Mask and then later bloated, slow paced, poorly saving entries, then into waggle land they broke my trust entirely. Then going open world-ish on them I'll take anything that can still actually do Zelda right, even if it isn't Zelda because Nintendo forgot as well.

This is why I have an eye on Oceanhorn as it screams the style (art and design) of Wind Waker, the last Zelda I truly felt nailed it right and was totally fun to play.

I agree about Star Fox Adventures but even if it is easy the ride it provides is fun, and goes to show sometimes the value is in the ride not how hard it can be.

There's nothing wrong with popular franchise clones as long as they're good games above all else.

What it usually comes down it is if a game is a love letter to the game it's copying or just a cynical cash in.

(Though sometimes cynical cash ins turn out fine in their own way.)

Well I disagree with all of this, so there we go. 8)
