To some degree, it depends on what I'm playing at the time, or the context of the conversation. I might think of modern gaming, but my primary association with gaming will always be the NES and SNES.

There is some research that suggests that the music you listened to in adolescence and young adulthood has the most staying power throughout the rest of your adult life. When you hear the sounds of that era, it sounds to you like "what music is supposed to sound like." So if you grew up listening to Pearl Jam and Nirvana, more modern rock bands may sound alright, but never worth the same level of devotion that you presumably have for Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

I wonder if there is a similar phenomenon for video games. Like, if you grew up on NES and SNES, then those represent video games for you. But if you grew up on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, then maybe that is the stick by which you measure later games. Or if you grew up on Asteroids and Space Invaders, then that is what immediately jumps to mind. I'm curious if the imagery that jumps to mind for you guys comes from a period of time when you were most immersed in gaming at a young age, or if there is just something so obviously video-gamey about things like Mario, Zelda, pixel art, and chip tunes that it doesn't matter what your age is, those are the icons of video games.

I grew up on chiptunes and 80s synthpop bands, and to this day my favorite music is electronic in nature. I don't much care for guitar based or symphonic music.

I've always figured my love for NES music made it inevitable that I'd love heavy metal.

Philips videopac!! It was the first console in the family and I just found out it was identical in everyway to the Magnavox Oddyssey 2
