How modern do you go?

The oldest games I have are for the NES. I only own three games for it though, since I've lately been focusing on getting games that I can't emulate. Plus I tend to have a hard time with a lot of older games because I get frustrated easily

For new stuff, I have a WiiU, PS4, Xbone, 3DS, and Vita (although technically I have a Vita TV instead of a Vita). It kind of feels weird to have all the new consoles, since I don't really care about having all of "the latest and greatest" stuff, but I didn't buy most of them. My boyfriend got the WiiU, PS4, and Xbone (which was free) and I got the rest.

Most of the games I enjoy come from the Sony consoles. So PS1, PS2, PS3 are the main ones I really like, then Vita, then PSP and PS4. I really like the amount of RPGs that are on those consoles, and plenty of them are not frustratingly difficult (which unfortunately is something I really don't like in games).

Like some others mentioned it's more about a starting point for me, which is the NES. I have zero interest in the first two generations.

The tricky spot is the PS2 era and the PC. The early 2000's were some of the best years ever for PC games, but games that were designed for consoles first and got ported over during these years can be a bit of a pain to work with. It's nice to get the best framerates and resolution, but I get a little tired of having to tweak config files a lot, configure CPU core usage, get widescreen hacks working, try to map a gamepad, etc, so I think in general it's best to only focus on PC exclusives during the late 90's to early mid 2000's, and if games from these years are on consoles then definitely stick with those versions instead. For the most part.

I get that people have their specified interests in the medium, but sometimes it almost sounds like self imposing limitations that just make you miss out on things. But oh well, what can you expect on a retro gaming forum and like I said above, I have no interest in the pre NES stuff at all so I'm eating my words a bit. I'm someone that consistently plays both old and new stuff back to back, and get very excited about both too, so it works out for me. After I wrap up Deus Ex Mankind Divided which has been a blast, I'll be replaying the first game for the 20th time. Can't wait.

Those games focus far more on gameplay than story, and story is really what keeps me playing games (most of the time).

It's so funny that you and Fragems say this because it's the exact opposite for me. If I wanted a story, I'd read a book (as I do anyway), and if I wanted to play something, I'd want there to be quality gameplay.

I wonder if this will continue to hold true for a lot of people who shy away from old and stick with new.

I have friends who are the exact same way, so I see where you're coming from. Books and such have always just had a hard time keeping my attention, so I prefer my stories through other methods (I legitimately do have ADHD, diagnosably, and not in the way people on the internet tend to fling that disorder around :/ ).

That's not to say that I never play games that have weak story and fun gameplay. I love Katamari Damacy and that game has basically no story. But something like Zelda II or Battle for Olympus just has a much harder time keeping my attention because the difficulty is so unforgiving and the fulfillment from the narrative just isn't rewarding enough to keep me going. I've had problems with games like Dark Souls (which, for the record, I think are okay, just not my jam) for very similar reasons, so it's not anything exclusive to older games. I suppose the end distillation of that rambling would be that I tend to not have a ton of patience for games that require a ton of practice to progress through, and games with good characters or interesting plot tend to insensitive perseverance through points of drudgery.

I am very specific when it comes to my gaming. I don't do PC or Handheld games.

For consoles, I start at the NES and I end at the PS2.

I was only slightly interested in the PS3/Wii generation. Now, I cannot even play a PS4 as I do not have a HD television.

For me, I prefer a lazer like focus. I like to dig deep into consoles and discover all the games it has to offer. And considering I'm playing catch up, I think I will have enough games to last a lifetime.

I stay current. I pre-order or day 1 buy games I am interested in. I have moved more heavily to PC in the past 2 years. I have all the modern consoles, but mostly only play the ps4 for my madden online franchise I play year round

Like a few others here, I range from NES to Wii with practically every major console in between. The biggest parts of my collection are NES, Genesis, SuperNES, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Wii.

Me too. I'm kind of a lukewarm Atari fan. It was mostly before my time. I can appreciate what Atari did for the industry (good and bad) but I don't spend too much time on it. I figure the Atari Flashback 2 has about 85% of all the Atari games I really desire to play in a good enough package.

The oldest I'll go is NES. I like arcade games from the pre-NES days, but home consoles from that era are difficult for me to enjoy.

My newest console is Wii-U, which I mainly use to play Super Smash Bros and Call of Duty online. I have a bummed out feeling that when Nintendo pulls the plug on the servers, I may just sell mine.

Xbox One and PS4 don't really appeal to me. The improvement isn't as dramatic as the game generations I grew up with, and few of the games really say "Play me, Anayo!" I'm more interested in VR once that becomes more affordable.

I should have mentioned that there are a fair amount of Atari 2600-7800 games that interest me. I just forget about the console half the time. Though simple a lot of those games are still in fact quite fun. I should just put an Atari emulator on my phone and play those games when I have 10-20 minutes to kill.

I'd generally say my interest starts more in the 8-bit era. I've got an NES and a Master System and all, but nothing older. That's where I started with console games to begin with, though I played Apple II games prior to that. I wouldn't rule out older stuff, but I do like story/progression based games moreso than repetition and high scores.

As I'm interested in the medium in general, I don't have a stopping point for modernity. I've got all the current consoles (save, I suppose, the New 3DS), and a good PC.

I go from the Atari 2600 in 1977 all the way up to the six modern platforms (high-end PC, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, Vita, and 3DS). There's no game platform I won't gleefully play.
