Not exactly retro, but China is making a bootleg of Overwatch:

There are some straight up just ripoffs of expensive famicom games out there too going back to the early 90s with really solid build quality too. I had a nice one of Moon Crystal, jsut didn't keep it as it didn't keep me interested for long but it's probably the most fluidly animated game I've seen on the system as they drew so many animation frames for sprites it's crazy. And then you have the renamed stuff that is also something to peek around for like Baby Mario aka Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa which I did keep.

Yeah, I only ever used the term with regards to after market consoles that play NES or Famicom games but not for the games themselves.

That one is actually just the NES game Toxic Crusaders slapped onto a Famicom cart and the title screen changed. So not exactly what you're looking for.

If you want a ghetto classic, find Somari. You're basically not so much after hacks but a grand rework of a game to something new, an epic sorta hack new like FF7, not just a basic to moderate swap I believe reading all this. Those who did FF7 did others, research that direction. Also there is a Pokemon Yellow Famicom conversion, translated too.

Yeah, FF7 is definitely on my wishlist. I mostly want the shitty, cringey, hilarious bootlegs.

Not exactly "bootleg" - though I doubt they were authorized by Sega - but how 'bout those Chinese Mega Drive RPGs from back in the day?

A couple have been translated and re-released which is pretty rad.

I'm partial to Barver Battle Saga: Tai Kong Zhan Shi, which was apparently called Final Fantasy in Russia.

Piko Interactive picked up some of those Gen/MD games dealing with the original Chinese people who did them, and slapped an english translation to the games to make it buyer friendly.

Truthfully, I'm still pretty green with Genesis/Mega Drive in general, licensed or bootleg. I do love just about anything quirky, though.
