I have plenty of time so walking a few miles would be easier plus would put a lot less wear and tear on my joints. At the moment I'm a little flabby to so running is pretty awkward anyways

. I usually walk the dog a mile or two each day anyways so he will probably be tagging along most trips.
At the moment I'm 315 pounds and 6' 4". So a "healthy" weight for me would be 155-205

.

As far as portion control goes, get smaller bowls and smaller plates. Fill them up and you'll still be eating less than you were before. It sounds like psychosomatic nonsense, but it works.

I just got an Apple Watch (feel free to roll your eyes) and my wife has a Fitbit.
I use the app Lifesum (on iOS and Android) to keep track of my food intact and it links in exercise data if you pay for the add-on.
It has a great, enjoyable interface that has made dieting almost like a game for me. With the paid upgrade, it has more data that lets you geek out over how to make your eating more balanced.
I've lost about 7 pounds in a month since I started. It does get harder to keep losing pounds as you go on, but it's not as difficult as a process as I thought.
Sure, it's a bummer to not eat as much as you would feel like, but like I said, a good app will dig into your gamer tendencies of trying to get a high score

I just got a fit bit in Friday. Been having fun with it so far. Plan on trying to walk 10 miles at least every other day.
Cutting back food alone I've dropped 7 pounds in the last 5 days but I figure the initial drop is going to be pretty rapid before I level out in a week or so.

Awesome! Congrats! A good 6 years ago, I ended up dropping a bit when I was on the WiiFit phase

I kept my portions down, but never tracked it. But I think the combination of keeping foot intake down a bit, keep moving, work in at least some casual exercise and then measuring/tracking both weight and intake helps you stay conscience of things.
All our new gadgets makes it a whole lot easier and fun.

Not to dissuade fitness goals, but you do realize that ends up being 3 1/3 hours of walking to cover 10 miles at average walking pace, right?

That's not bad -- I like to go out for walks on my lunch break. If you spread that out over the week, it's an enjoyable time while staying active. And I'm of the school of thinking you don't really need to do intense exercise a lot in order to lose weight.

I hate to admit it I have a fitbit charge HR too, got it maybe a month ago now, free from my work racking up some health points over the last couple years I had no idea I had which would expire at the end of June so I cashed it out. It's entertaining seeing how it can read your body heat and heart rate to figure out if you're working yourself some, loafing, sleeping and all that and it can fairly well accurately estimate calories burned in a 24hr period. It tracks it all, and if you know what you're putting in your face it's not hard to come in under their number at all and it is in a slightly annoying way motivational. The way life is around here during M-F as I work at home it's hard to hit over 5K steps so I make that a goal, but weekends I try and double that and have a few times, others fairly close in the mid 8k-9k range.
