I've beaten Super and Final, not sure about the originals. I'll bust out R-Types and check them out again!
I think I only get like 2 levels into R-Type III. I wish I owned that one too... basically impossible now haha. Has anyone here managed to best this one? It's insane.
Together Retro: R-Type
Re: Together Retro: R-Type
Just started playing R-Type through R-Types on the PS1 on my PS3.
Is there supposed to be an input delay? Like, is that just part of what makes R-Type what it is? Because there's definitely a very noticeable delay between the time I press up or down on my controller or arcade stick (I tried both just to make sure it wasn't a controller issue) and my ship actually moving. It especially gets me killed when an enemy shoots in the direction I'm currently going, I reverse direction, but my ship is still going in the previous direction due to the input delay.
I dunno if that's a issue with PS1 emulation on the PS3 or if it's just what R-Type is. I remember R-Type being slow, but I don't remember there actually being a delay.

Yes, it's just like the PS1 R-Types with a little bit more, 5 ways to play. You can play the color & B/W versions of R-Type and R-Type II or R-Type DX which I believe mixes up I & II.

Welp, just downloaded a Mame Rom of R-Type, and yeah, it's definitely NOT the game itself, R-Type itself is actually super responsive, I could immediately feel the difference and beat the first level first try while it took me like four game over screens to do the same on R-Types. It's definitely something going on with either the PS1 port, PS3's emulation of the PS1, or the PS3's handling of my controller.
Edit: Looks like going through Settings -> Game Settings and disabling the PS/PS2 Upscaler works. Guess I'll just have to deal with playing in widescreen. There's still some lag, not nearly as responsive as playing in MAME, but at least it's not unplayable now.

That anime damn looks good!
My options are limited to Virtual Console, XBLA (has free demo too!) or making my own R-Type via Blast Works. Lol

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Re: Together Retro: R-Type
I had been planning to play the Amiga port as Factor 5 made it available as freeware. Strangely, I've had trouble getting it to boot in Amiga Forever even with the 3.1 kickstart that's included in the Plus Edition. Odd, because I had no problem playing the Amiga port of BC Kid that Factor 5 also made freeware.
Anyway, it dawned on me that the arcade game is playable in browser thanks to Archive.org:

I don't know if you can use a controller with this, or just keyboard. If it's the latter then you'll need joy2key or similar program to map to a controller...

Factor 5? Is the music incredible for that version?

From what I understand, the interlace-to-progressive video conversion for HDTVs causes a delay, no matter what setting your PS3 is set at. If you are using the PS1 R-Types disc, playing it on a PS1/2* and a CRT tv will eliminate the delay.
*Note: There might be some graphical issues playing R-Types on a PS2, but that might be R-Type Delta I'm thinking about. Either way, the graphical issues aren't major.
