Keep it to RPGs, I say. Open it up to all genres and then it just becomes a general recommendation thread, which I can see getting sidetracked with bunches of random conversations and opinions.

Oh, and I made a list! Whatever is picked won't literally be played "next" but more likely after the upcoming Together RPG. Time constraints, and all.

Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu
King's Field
Parasite Eve
Valkyrie Profile
Vandal Hearts

I'd say Parasite Eve because it's a neat combination of survivor horror and RPG. The battles are 100% RPG; you get a minor swirl to a fixed screen and you and the enemies have a time bar and you do menu based combat. But the rest of the exploration feels closer to what you'd see in an RE game. PE2 drops most of the RPG stuff (aside from some stat leveling iirc) in favor of going full on survival horror.

I'm gonna put mine up now too, so I can jump right in after finishing Dungeon Travelers:

EDIT: Split them between console and handheld. Pick one of each please!

Options
Console
1. Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu To Hikari No Ken (Famicom)
2. Opoona (Wii)
3. Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
4. Earthbound Beginnings (Wii U VC)
5. Dragon Quest (NES)

Handheld
1. Atelier Rorona (Vita)
2. Bravely Default (3DS)
3. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. (3DS)
4. Final Fantasy X-2 (Vita)
5. Final Fantasy Adventure (GB)

Lots of choice here, from lots of gens. So many RPGs I need to play. This is just under 1/3 of my RPGs I need to finish >_<

And Bone, I second Parasite Eve, if only because that's the one I most want to play from your list. No PAL release :(

Console: 100% do Dragon Quest. It's the bones upon which so many JRPGs are built and it'll be interesting for you to see where it all began.

Handheld: Bravely Default, because the sequel lands in a month and a half and you need to be caught up on things. And it's the best Final Fantasy game in years.

Dragon Quest is the foundation of turn-based JRPGs. You'll appreciate a game like Mother much more if you experience Dragon Quest first.

As for the handheld, well I enjoy Final Fantasy Adventure. It's a solid action-RPG and lays the groundwork for two absolutely phenomenal sequels.

Save Fire Emblem for the Summer Challenge. I am.

Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu
King's Field
Parasite Eve
Valkyrie Profile
Vandal Hearts

GO!
I'll be different.

Vandal Hearts is a really good Strategy game. If you like Fire Emblem, you'll LOVE Vandal Hearts. I think the second one is better, but the first one is amazing.

Valkyrie Profile is WONDERFUL! Like VP2, it's graphically beautiful and one of the best looking PS1 RPG's out there. The game mechanic is really unique as it is a RPG with a Timer. The game has multiple endings and so many characters with heart wrenching stories. Also, the 2D puzzles are clever and the battle system is complex and very addicting.

Parasite Eve is next for me, but I've played those two. It all depends on your mood, but I enjoyed Valkyrie Profile more.

I rarely post but this has me intrigued so I'm game.

People's list so far:
BoneSnapDeez - Jade Cocoon. I read up a little and a RPG / Pet Sim hybrid seems pretty cool and I never heard of it till now. I would like to hear your opinion on it once you play it.

AlienJesus - Console - Dragon Quest. If you havent played or beaten it, it is defintely needed if you like JRPGs. It is a nice building block as others have said and it just has some charm to it that can never be forgotten...It's probably just the intro music but I think there might be something else to it.
Handheld - Final Fantasy Adventure - This game rules. Whenever I play it I am baffled at how they stuck so much into one GB cart, and even so early in the handhelds lifespan. Also, it is just a fun game with some catchy music also.

Alright, I split my between handheld and console as well since I like that idea. Also, I am taking a work trip to Mexico at the end of the month so I should be able to get some good handheld time in on the flights.

Console:
Miracle Warriors Seal of the Dark Lord - Master System
Blue Dragon - Xbox 360
Unlimited Saga - PS2 (I know, but the game intrigues me)
Aidyn Chronicles The First Mage - N64

Handheld:
Brave Story New Traveler - PSP
Fire Emblem Awakening - 3DS
The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky - PSP
Generation of Chaos - PSP
Gungnir - PSP

Of those the only ones I've personally beaten are King's Field, Parasite Eve, and Valkyrie Profile. I've played Vandal Hearts some. Never played Jade Cocoon.

Of course I vote King's Field first. It's freaking amazing once you get used to it and the concept clicks.

Second, Valkyrie Profile is better than Parasite Eve. But be forewarned, playing VP without a walkthrough is a bad idea. And you know I don't recommend walkthroughs so that's saying something.

Third, Parasite Eve. It's a good game, with some issues, but is totally worth playing.

I don't have enough experience with the other two to vote honestly.

Out of all those, I've only beaten Dragon Quest, and it was the GBC version at that. However, it was a damn fine game, and I fully recommend it. Not just because it's a classic, but because it's simply a great JRPG. Now, I'm talking about the GBC version here. I didn't enjoy the NES version nearly as much in contrast.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
