I just got done playing Albert Odyssey the other day. I was thinking about playing Magic Knight Rayearth next... but then I saw it was an Action RPG and not turn-based. It's pretty good though, huh? Maybe I'll give it a whirl...

Yes, it's real-time. No levels, with "heart container" type items similar to Zelda.

Screenshots may appear to look like Secret of Mana, with the three characters and all, but only one is "active" (can deal or receive damage) while the other two just float behind.

You have never been more correct, sir.

Possibly not the right question in the OP, as the Saturn is lacking in games befitting of a "killer-app" moniker. The breadth of the library, and strength of its base-line are where the Saturn's appeal lies, in my estimation--especially where it pertains to arcade/PC conversion and JRPGs.

For the sake of conversation, though:

Not comprehensive. A penchant for Japanese adventure games, and PC ports of varying quality expands the list.

If one were more interested in new releases or emulation of the arcade ports, and/or limited by language barriers, the Saturn is pretty non-essential.

Well that matter is subjective entirely for any given platform. I mean, I remember when Nights was considered a killer app for the Saturn, at least according to every major gaming magazine of the time.

Really what I'm asking folks here is; what are the "must play" Saturn games in their own personal opinion. Nothing more than that. If you don't think there are any "must play" games for the Saturn, then that's fair enough too.

Thing is, I do believe that's true to a large extent. There's a lot of solid stuff, but not many that make me step back and go, "Wow!"

I still need to get around to finishing the Shining Force 3 trilogy. I just wish it had the old sprite-based battle animations, it aged way better than SF3. I'm still occasionally popping in on the translation project, but I'm pretty sure it's all playable from start to finish at this point. I've got so much to play that I can be patient, though, and wait for a final, polished version.

I almost mentioned Guardian Heroes, another great one for sure. Quite replayable, too, with the branching paths and multiple characters, who differ significantly from each other, unlike a lot of other brawlers.

I dunno if you can really call a system that has Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, the Panzer Dragoon series, Dragon Force, Die Hard Arcade, the only real home versions of several CPS2 titles (sorry, PS1's XvSF didn't count back then and sure as hell doesn't now) and arcade shmups a system that lacks a killer app.

Sure, if you are going to count emulation as a legitimate option, then a lot of the Saturn's options are eliminated... but if you are going to do that, then you may as well say that the NES, SNES and Genesis lack killer apps as well.

And if you do count re-releases of games on future consoles, there's still plenty of games like Panzer Dragoon Saga, X-Men vs Street Fighter, MSH vs Street Fighter, Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Astal, Mr Bones, Astra Superstars, Groove On Fight, Fighters Megamix and tons of others that have never been re-released.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can sleep on this system.

For me I love the arcade 3 pak. And it's pretty cheap to get. Virtua fighter 2, virtua cop, and Daytona USA. Also love Manxtt and street fighter alpha 2. Even though I don't have it yet you need actually you must must must get the 4 in1 action replay to play the imports and the marvel and Xmen vs street fighters games
