The story is pretty basic: in small town in Maine a mysterious mist appears and it's chock full of monsters. A man and his kid are in a supermarket at the time and they stay there for safety, along with other residents. Then folks start turning against each other...
I second this it's pretty awesome both for the monsters and the humans who aren't much better. The ending is also great in it's own way.
I nominate it for one of the most cruel endings ever.

Or try and explain why RZ's Halloween II is good. Either way, he needs to get in here.
sigh.

I was kind of keeping away cuz we have talked about this in other threads, but mostly because there's been like 50% of the recommendations here that I wouldn't co-sign and didn't want to crap on anyone's taste haha.

That said, I'll go back and tell you which ones so far I would agree with.

Session 9 - is def good. And seeing as how Danvers is so close to me and I saw that asylum before it was turned into condos, there was an extra creepiness for me. Though I would not put this one too high on the list. I feel like it gets a bit more praise than deserved. But still worth seeing.

Jennifer's Body - F yeah! So slept on. This is like Mean Girls... with a succubus. I love this movie.

Trick R Treat - is a new classic. Don't confuse it with Trick Or Treat tho.

Evil Dead (2013) - Ack is right... it is pretty tough. BUT, it turned out easier to watch the second time. Kind of. It is like impressive just how over the top violent this is. But I liked it a lot - mostly because it felt like Evil Dead 4 in the sense that there was no Ash, and it was new kids in current day and the car was there.

You're Next - surprised me! Looks like some kind of Strangers knock-off but some crazy twists. Great script. Lotta fun.

Cabin In The Woods - MUST SEE. Seriously. This is thee horror movie fans' horror movie. I don't want to tell you ANYTHING about it. Just see it.

House Of The Devil - brilliant slow burn.

Halloween II (RZ's) - um, I can only recommend if you're watching the unrated cut. It's a totally diff movie that way. An interesting look at PTSD. But, that's not one I'd recommend so highly...

NOW THE AWESOME SHIT YOU GUYS FORGOT:

The Innkeepers - brilliant slow-burn. And me and my wife stayed at that inn and it was seriously scary.

Lords Of Salem - this is so so so overlooked. Somehow has grown to be my fav RZ movie. So moody and weird and creepy.

House Of 1000 Corpses - this is the really fun RZ movie. Seen it a million times.

Cabin Fever - You wanna see kids get all gross and die in the woods? You got it!

Hostel II - Yup, I said it. I like the sequel more than the original. Both great, but the sequel I don't know. I think the characters are better and it's just a better written script. The first feels like straight torture porn, the second feels like a more realized story.

Scream 4 - Best Scream since Scream!

My Bloody Valentine - a really good "remake"... pretty sure I like it more than the original actually.

Friday The 13th - in fairness anything with Jason in it I'm probably gonna like. But the "remake" did a good job I think of modernizing things. Plus, I like to just pretend that it's not a remake at all and it's just y'know, the next one chronologically.

Black Xmas - I honestly think Black Xmas is way better than Black Christmas. Come at me. Better kills, great cast, excellent pacing and the visuals make red & green look so gross.

...I'm sure I'll think of more, but this is just the immediate stuff popping in my head.

Well, we didn't want to take ALL of your suggestions, you know.

And...well, I really like Session 9, but I agree with you. It's the imagery of the film that is so astounding, not the plot. I find the plot bland. But man, it's a gem to look at, and it just gets creepier knowing that one character was cut from the film but some of the footage related to her is still in the movie.

Is Black Xmas really that good? I've seen Black Christmas but have been avoiding the remake.

it's awesome, assuming you're ok with eyeball violence. We watch it every year while wrapping presents since it was released on DVD. It's way more stereotypical slasher than the original - which is good.

I'm a fan of Fulci, so...yeah, let's do this.

I will second:

The Descent
Housebound
House of the Devil
The Innkeepers
Jennifer's Body
The Orphanage
Paranormal Activity
Session 9
You're Next

I really cannot recommend Trick 'r Treat. Most of you seem to like it, however; so, I must be missing something....Also, High Tension's incredibly dumb ending ruined the film for me.

Also, more of you need to see The Bay. It is great. I also recommend The Babadook, The Banshee Chapter, Drag Me to Hell, Ginger Snaps, Let the Right One In, The Ring, Silent House, A Tale of Two Sisters, Them, and The Woman in Black.

They are probably more science fiction than horror, but I also recommend Cube and Europa Report.

Have fun!

by "modern" I was doing 2000 or later. Otherwise Gingersnaps would have been on there. That was 99 wasn't it? Maybe not. Either way, Ginger Snaps rules.

The Bay was very good.

Banshee Chapter is amazing. It's basically a remake of From Beyond that incorporates MK-Ultra and Hunter S. Thompson. It's as insane as you think it is.

Drag Me To Hell is another great call. Thank you. Love that one. So overlooked.

Horror is far from one of the movie genres I should recommend in, but I have to throw a bone to one of my personal favorites.

Texas Chainsaw
The very poorly reviewed and received sequel-ish movie. I will say, if you haven't already made an opinion about the movie, that one does have to keep a somewhat open mind to what's going on, and why. The movie is both physical, violent horror, and psychological horror. I think people either tend not to see the second form of horror, don't understand it, or feel it isn't done well. Feeling it isn't done well is a fair judgement, but I'd say give it a try just to see.

you mean the recent one right? That was called Texas Chainsaw 3D in theaters? I thought it was great. It was by far the best of the 2000's Texas Chainsaw movies. I'd recommend this one as well.
