Yeah I wonder about things like that too. I only need my Saturn to look better because of all the 2D sprite based titles. PSX and even N64 are fine the way they are via emulator.

I just hope my little screen has an option to force 4:3.

But I have another question; wouldn't I still need a cable to take S-Video and convert it to HDMI? If so know a decent quality one?

That's not a scaler. It's just a convertor. If you connect your Dreamcast's VGA box to it, it will change the signal to HDMI, but it won't change the resolution. The video data will still be sent in 480p. If the TV is capable of working with a 480p signal it will then upscale the image. My TV will only accept 480p on one of the three HDMI ports, for example.

What are you trying to convert from S-video? I recommended Scart to HDMI cause that is superior to S-video. We didn't get Scart here in USA but it is true RGB and looks the best.

My Dreamcast is on S-video and it looks great, but it is still no VGA or Scart. I guess S-video is just slightly under Scart but yeah, if you want to use that instead of it they make converters for that too.

All the LCD/LED TVs I have come across have different view/picture modes; it won't necessarily say "4:3", but most, if not all, should have an option or menu for it somewhere.

Also, One of the component jacks usually double as composite video. You might have to check the documentation for the TV though. Might look terrible, but would work nonetheless.
I would be more worried about input lag between gameplay and the TV. Not a huge deal for some games, but incredibly annoying in fighters and shmups (2 major genres for the Saturn, I might add).

As far as S-video, it is still a matter of converting the signal. I really don't think there are really any better options (yet) than an XRGB.

I'm still new to adapters though (and still game on CRTs mostly), so there might be some decent affordable options.

Soooo happy to recently acquire an LCD TV that has VGA, S-video, and a 480i gaming mode. All I need now is a 90 degree swivel/mount for TATE mode and my life is complete

Could you point me in the right direction to what I would need? Unfortunately my current display only has the option to change it to "Normal," "Wide," "Zoom." and "cinema." No 4:3 sadly. I would have gone the route like in the video in a heart beat if not for the stretching issue. :(

So now all I can do is take whatever the Japanese Saturn (our US version) will output and convert that with an adapter of some sort to be able to even plug it into this television.

Normal would be non stretched and show as 4.3. Now if you are wanting to know a good Svid cable I can look around for you but I personally haven't gotten one for mine yet.

So do you want me to look for Svid cables for your Saturn or what are you asking?

Edit: Actually I found a really good link you should check out. This might be pretty helpful to you.

Basically as it stands (and according to the video) if I utilize the hardware he suggests it'll look nice but the image will be stretched. Since my LED HDTV doesn't have the capability to force 4:3 I'm forced to simply take whatever the Saturn outputs (I thought it was S-Video) and vai an adapter be able to hook it up to one of the 3 HDMI inputs or even the YRGB, whichever would yield me the best results.

I don't know enough about this stuff to be sure whatever conversion cable I get would be decent quality.

This seems to be what a lot of Saturn owners use.

Here is an affordable Svid for the Saturn.

Here is a more pricey official one for $40 from Japan.

Unfortunately that device stretches the image as well. Because I can't change that on this television whatever I use to connect the Saturn must output 4:3 and not 16:9 or 16:10 stretched.
