Re: The end of PC gaming
that is why I like me some Puzzle Quest. Sure it is a Match 3 game, but it is a Match 3 RPG!

Re: The end of PC gaming
I'm more of a Henry Hatsworth guy.
A shame that game never got much attention or a sequel. One of my top ten DS games for sure.

I prefer in a match up puzzle-RPZG game Puzzle & Dragons
Re: The end of PC gaming
I think this is more like the end of the Windows operating system as it's now (more of) a bloated piece of shit.
Sticking with Windows 7 at the moment for as long as I possibly can...

Re: The end of PC gaming
Well I'd kind of agree with that, but Win 8.1 if you use an exterior program like I do (Classic Shell) is fantastic as it's like a more refined version of Win7. Win 10 though, that one is bringing back the start button and easy access of things and not making an OS shoehorned from a tablet environment. The metro tiles are there as an option, but they're off the start button, it's not forced.

I know that the thread title is a joke, but I feel like posting this:

Columns was 5 years before Panel de Pon. And I'm not even sure that would be the first match-three game.
Maybe I am mistaken, but these days, doesn't match-3 refer largely to the swapping of two adjacent tiles to make a 3-tile match? I haven't seen anything referred to as a match-3 that didn't also involve the swap.

For me "match-3" is just that, matching three of the same type, like in Magical Drop.

Well, since at least 2 of you interpret match-3 more broadly, I may indeed be incorrect. In that case, the match-3 sub-variant that involves swapping adjacent tiles had its beginning with Panel de Pon, and Bejeweled and Puzzle Quest and Candy Crush and all those adjacent-swap match-3 games ripped of the core mechanic from Panel de Pon. That particular variant has certainly been the most popular and most copied in the current generation of games. I suspect the adjacent-swap match-3 is more copied at this point even than Tetris.

Oh absolutely. Tetris really isn't copied that much really. Games like Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Fighter all seem to lend themselves to their own category. Sure fall blocks that can be rotated, but Tetris was all about those sweet sweet lines and making everything fall into place perfectly where as Puyo Puyo/Puzzle Fighter/Columns was all about combos.
