Well, as you might now, I used to be a pretty big JRPG fan and now it's the only genre I consider to be intrinsically flawed and uninteresting.
The main reason is that I realized I was wasting my time, that they are (often extremely long) combat-focused games in which combat has absolutely no meaning. I don't do anything interesting when I fight a slime, or even a boss. I just spam attacks and press heal when HP drops below a certain point. It's not something I can call interesting or good, I just don't care about it, and doing over and over is beyond grating.
And, really, I gave JRPGs a pass because like every other teenager, I liked those dumb, "epic", wish-fulfillment plots which aren't even connected to the main mechanics. I admit I had no taste, but as I grew up, I realized that Final Fantasy is just no Treasure Island.

Yeah....I kind of felt the same way when it first came out. I liked it through my first playthrough ("finally a 3D Sonic game without stupid extra game play), but.....I got bored of the grinding by the very next playthrough.SonicGamer74 wrote:Easy answer. Sonic Heroes.
I loved the game when I was a kid, and in my teens. It was one of my favorite Sonic games. I found barely any issue with it.
...And now, I can't even get anywhere past the first two levels, because I just literally can't play the game THAT long. The teamwork aspect is exceptionally confusing to work, and I am just not a fan of how long the game itself is. I give the game some credit for being a nice representation of how a Classic Sonic game could work in a 3D environment, and I do kind of like it; it's just literally everything else about the game keeps me from liking it. Keep in mind; I'm talking more about the Gamecube version. The PS2 version is borderline unplayable, IMO.
That is DEFINETLY what happened manJmustang1968 wrote: Goldeneye is another. Though, to me, this might be a case of it aged poorly.
Really great example....but shut up, I still like Final Fantasy no matter how bad it really isErik_Twice wrote:Well, as you might now, I used to be a pretty big JRPG fan and now it's the only genre I consider to be intrinsically flawed and uninteresting.

I think replaying Final Fantasy again and again is my biggest guilty pleasure.

I never got into Sonic Heroes, even when it first came out. The controls are slippery as hell... one small push of the analog stick and you go flying off in that direction. The sensitivity/acceleration is way too high. Plus it's so clunky having to switch between characters, and the voice-clips you have to hear over and over again... yeah screw that game.
Also, I definitely think with Pokemon it takes a speck more thought, just as one example, though it's not really a "traditional" JRPG. Maybe other more complex games in the genre would be better options to try.
I agree with you 100%, yet there's something about RPG's that just feel good... that I want to keep playing. and I have no idea why.Erik_Twice wrote:Well, as you might now, I used to be a pretty big JRPG fan and now it's the only genre I consider to be intrinsically flawed and uninteresting.

The Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy. I went back last year and tried to play through them. The first one actually wasn't bad, I still like that one. But Warrior Within and Two Thrones were basically unplayable to me. Those two games are far more combat focused than the first of the trilogy, but for all three of them the controls have not aged very well. I had numerous occasions of pressing a button and then being frustrated when my character seemed to move at a sluggish pace and I would be hit while in the middle of an attack animation, and just in general the whole game's combat systems feel slow and clunky.
I'm too use to more responsive action games nowadays, like Devil May Cry and such where I don't run in to those kinds of problems most of the time, and it made Warrior Within and Two Thrones very unenjoyable for me.
Again, I still like the first Sands of Time game. Combat in that one is more simplistic and in the time I played it I didn't run in to those problems, so I think that one still holds up. And considering it was always the best one of the series I don't think I'm losing out on much.
