I agree that the robot thing is just a subset of a bigger trend, perhaps I should change it.

I know, I just am sitting here and actually not coming up with a lot of well known video game examples that fit that. Mega Man? If you expand 'robots' to 'any creature/monster/etc' then I guess the Resident Evil games sorta fit? Dino Crisis? Honestly I'm not drawing much, nowhere near as much as the other two plot examples at least.

Lots of older games. You have stuff like Breakout, V-Five, System Shock, Portal, Gain Ground, Wasteland, Marathon, etc, etc.

Classic Frankenstein's monster trope. Robots are just a more specific version, but basically fallas under the ones own creation turns against them.

Another came to mind was the main character Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening.

That's probably over half of anything that even remotely pretends to have a coherent and dramatic story.

Falls into the "creatures that turn evil" subplot when the virus was genetically engineered.

Also, a lot of horror games use this plot device. A LOT.

The Condemned series offers a serial killer fixated on the protagonist who happens to be the son of a friend of the protagonist's father. Unfortunately the plot is kind of a mess, so take it as a twisted son, the fault of a killer cult, or however you like.

Dino Crisis is actually a story of time travel gone wrong.
