Of those funds, he states that he intends to spend heavily on Lucina, Palutena, Robin, and Zero Suit Samus -- all out of a similar hatred and disdain that he has for Rosalina.
Women issues obviously.

I do like the evil cartoon villain-esque "I'm going to buy them so YOU can't enjoy them!!!" line.

It's designed to cost a lot more than it really needs to, and has created demand around an artificial lack of supply.

The functional core is what, an NTAG215, that could literally be printed on a sticker for a few cents?

That was my impression as well.

If you haven't, you should read our ongoing amiibo thread. As a community, we've done a great job of breaking down the pros/cons and nature of the amiibo product and it's kind of amazing how polarizing such a simple toyline has turned out to be.

I personally love 'em.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

If you broke down the cost of many items we buy you could trivialize it in some way. Many also enjoy them to have and display due to the art of the figurines themselves.

Look, you guys are all missing what's really going on here. His protest Amiibos are all female characters. CLEARLY he's buying a ton of each of them as part of the creepy shrine he's set up in his place, and he's giving the story he's giving as a cover.

I think your on to something, especially because it makes no sense what so ever to buy the toy in mass quanities especially if you have a mass distaste for certain ones. It'd make more sense to advocate people steering clear of these ones instead of sending money to nintendo and supporting them in making more of these particular ones. I just don't grasp why you would do that even if in spite to do a cliche evil "Oh you like these? well I'm going to buy them all and destroy them!!!". Never has made sense in cartoons or other shows doesn't make sense here either....

Almost everything about "hardcore" video game collecting leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This is but one of many examples.

I don't disagree with that. My point is more that the functionality does not need to be rare or expensive. It's based around technology that's designed to be cheap, for inventory/loss prevention and so on. So, to me, the supposed use is at odds with making the product collectible.
Kind of the collect vs play mentality. For the purpose of actually using an Amiibo to store stats and go fight in a tournament or whatever, Nintendo could practically give them away. Or, at least, all but guarantee that anyone could find whatever character they wanted to.

The little figurine is collectible, and understandably takes up retail shelf space, making having all of them available at retail impractical. It's also unnecessary, in the sense of actually making the product do what Bogus was talking about.

More or less, I think Nintendo should release "just to play with" versions for cheap, or tossed in for free with figures. Could take the form (and price point) of Pogs, more or less.

No mention of Peach, Wii Fit Trainer, or Zelda, though (and tangentially original Samus and Sheik). So maybe just certain females? Also, have they said whether they're going to use the male or female Robin for the amiibo?

Anyway, such a weird, weird story. It almost makes me wonder if it's just somebody doing some heavy trolling, and not completely serious. Either that, or he's got some potential mental health issues.
