Haha, similar situation here. Surprised to see how many people keep up with current gen stuff.
This is a good thread for me to dig up in 2020.
And here. There are few releases from 2014 that i have played like Freedom Wars and Drakengard 3 but that's mostly it. I do have bunch of RPGs made in 2014 for the VITA but i haven't been on the right mood to play them.
Mostly i have been playing older PS3 games this year. I tend to wait prices to go down and there honestly hasn't been all that many interesting titles this year on the PS3 anyways.
PC had a lot of great stuff this year but i do not even have chance to play games like Wasteland 2 and the new Divinity game because my computer is terrible.
Probably Talisman Digital Edition. Sure its a thirty year old boardgame, but the videogame version, that came out in January, has taken over a solid 100 hours of my gaming this year.
Yeah, I don't really keep up with new releases either... new games can be pretty expensive so I usually wait.
Only games from this year that I have spent some time with are Conception II and Rusty's Real Deal Baseball... Since I've had more fun overall with Rusty's, I guess that's my GOTY? If I had Fantasy Life or Atelier Rorona Plus though, one of those would almost certainly be my GOTY.
Realized that the majority of 2014 games I have played have been Nintendo games.
Let's run down what I think is the Game of the Year and some honorable mentions.
Game of the Year, by default has to go to Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. The game is jam packed with features, unique characters and playstyles that in all honesty will entertain for years to come. I feel like the community is very much backing the title with the crazy games people are making up like Smashketball. It really is being embraced by the competitive community and casual alike. I love it and I honestly feel it is the best in the series.
Other honorable mentions go tooooooooo....
DreamFall Chapters - Although the first chapter was released, I still consider this to be a phenomenal game. I find it's storytelling and character building of the highest caliber and have become engaged in the world like no other. I am dying to see what happens next and to see how the decisions I make affect the story in a style similar to Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead games. Plus, it is one of three game series that I desperately wanted to see a conclusion to that I never felt was going to happen, so that adds to the passion I have for the title. It is not my Game of the Year only because we do not have the rest of the chapters out to play.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze - I am not a huge fan of the Donkey Kong Country franchise. This game, I felt was the perfect balance of challenging, but not infuriating. It was a great mix of platforming and action that really needs to be treasured as a single player experience. The multi-player, on the other hand is absolutely unforgiving. Donkey Kong, by himself is severely hampered as a solo character and needs the added benefit of his partners to really overcome the obstacles he faces. This stunted multi-player is why it isn't my Game of the Year.
Fract OSC - A first person exploration/puzzle/music creation game was really a unique and interesting concept. As the player, you explore a long dead civilization in a digital, music-powered realm. The goal is to go to various districts and turn the power back on by solving music based puzzles. What made it great was that the puzzles could be solved numerous ways, crafting a unique song that you yourself make. Add to it that it has it's own music synthesizer that you can unlock parts and instruments to as you play, makes it even more expressive. I love this game.

-I am the idiot that likes to have fun and be happy.
I'm gonna do my Top 10 list at the actual end of the year like I do every year. Generally, November and December are often my "cram the remaining games I meant to play this year" months, although there's really only a couple of those left at this point. But still juggling a couple of contenders and deciding on ranking and all that.
So far of what's been mentioned I can echo Dave's inclusion of Shovel Knight strongly.

I enjoyed it for what it is...but there wasn't much challenge or story or anything other than an "oh, cool" factor to it. I feel like this is an overrated but easy pick in a weak year for mobile games. Are there other iOS/Android contenders from 2014 I need to check out?

Monument Valley I wasn't able to force into a resolution to work well on my Shield, so I'll have to fire it up on my tablet sometime. 2014 Android games... well I'm loving The Wolf Among Us in portable form, but it's not like that's a strictly Android game. I played quite a few Android games that didn't wow me from this year too. Aerena, the Falling Skies mobile game, etc.
Oh! QuizUp is prob my favorite Android game of the year. But y'know it's just a competitive trivia game.
