Unknown, but people will make it work. If we are lucky it will mount as a USB HID, but we wont know for another week or so.

Right, I figured if it didn't work out of the box (which is likely to not) then people would get it working.

Unfortunately official Gamecube controllers are expensive, especially the Wavebird. As much as I'd like to have an official Nintendo brand GameCube controller, they are just too expensive. So, what is the best 3rd party controller that I could get for relatively cheap?

Go for a brand new official Gamecube controller. They're re-manufacturing OEM Gamecube controllers because of the new Smash Bros. since Nintendo is selling an adapter to let people use old ones. You can go to any Gamestop and pre-order one for $29.99 and get it next week on 11/21/14, the same day as the new Smash Bros.

Trust me, it's worth the $29.99 and will work on all Gamecube and Gamecube compatible Wii consoles alongside all Wii U Gamecube controller adapters.

The white Japanese Gamecube controllers you can buy from the following link are also official and imported from Japan:

These were released around the time that Smash Bros Brawl was released and are also compatible with all Gamecube and Wii consoles or Wii U adapters. Alongside the white color scheme these controllers also feature an extra long cable to compensate for the Wii's top mounted controller ports.

That's what I'm hoping as well, although I just went with the $100 Smash bundle with a new GCN controller and the one adapter.

Okay, this is not THE best, but it's a worthy alternative if you can find:

The T-Wireless/Thrustmaster lets you remap the buttons, which makes it a godsend for Mega Man Collection (and Metal Slug Anthology if you own it for Wii).

Be advised that the D-pad isn't perfect (a little stiff for fighters), but works well enough for my purposes.

Otherwise, there are always playstation adapters (which work well as long as they are dual analog).
I used to not like the PS controllers, but I've had to warm up to them out of necessity (all of the PS1, PS2, and PS3 library of games).

Ugh, tell me about it. I had a pair that I sold before the price went up. I'd be nice to have one again, but I comfort myself by remembering that they don't have force feedback.
