Cleveland has gotten some heat about Indians. They had to quit using their mascot back in the 80s.

i don't believe they quit using chef wahoo. i think they just started phasing him last couple of months and it's just because it's a bad caricature of a race. you hear the same from the braves mascot from time to time. but has nothing to do with the mascot names of those 2 teams.

Yeah, the Braves have actually been using their mascot more lately, which has surprised me considering the discussion around the Redskins.

So long as the Seminoles name doesn't get forcibly changed, as Florida State does a lot of work with the Seminole tribe, provides discounts and scholarships to Seminole students, and provides archives and access to historical documentation concerning the tribe.

The difference between "redskins" and the other terms is that "redskins" is a racial slur. It's not that hard. It's a historically established word used to disenfranchise a large group of people.

If your other team names served the same purpose, yes, they should be changed. Team names change all the time, you'll get over it.

Show me where Redskin is a historically established slur. Not a single message board or anything else recognizes it as a slur, there's nothing out there to say it's always been a slur.

The word Redskin is the same today as it has always been. It hasn't changed. What changed was people needed something to get offended over. They need a new rallying cry. So they found something to ban.

If there isn't a fight to found, trust me, people are going to decide on something and try to change it. As far as those other names, yeah they all mean the same thing. They are making use of a group of people as a sports nickname. I love how the Seminoles came out and supported Florida State for using it and letting a person dress up as a Seminole Warrior and throw the spear at midfield. It's awesome and it's a way to honor those people. It's not offensive at all. It's an honor.

This is what I think people are missing. The way Redskins is used, it's not representing an Indian in 2014. It's representing a former way of life where there were factual Indian Warriors that fought for their homeland. That's what it's supposed to represent. Not Joe Blow Indian down at the reservation.
