There is a sizable divide between the gaming press and their readers and both sides tend to heavily distrust each other. Readers think reviewers are corrupt, biased and unprofessional and the press thinks their readers are dumb, ignorant and sexist. There was a lot of hate being built up and once game journalism got heavily involved into feminism and generally became very upfront about its surprisingly monolithic left-wing American politics and ideals I knew it was going to blow up sooner or later. EDIT: Also, Divinity: Original Sin had its cover image censored so as to add more clothing, IIRC.
And so when an excuse was given, everything exploded. Quinn was an obvious face but the problems and concerns are deeper than any particular person.
It's not very common but both Tomb Raider (2014) and Hotline Miami 2 were self-censored before released after complaints were made before the games were released. In both cases, scenes that tackled rape (well, as much as you can tackle rape without actually having any rape occuring) were removed.BoneSnapDeez wrote:When/where is this actually happened?
There have also been similar controversies for, well, practically all games made during the last ten years. The new Castlevania was seen as sexist, the new Far Cry 4 is seen as homophobic and god knows what game will see complaints before being released next. I even wrote an article about it because it's so prevalent, I think you read it (IIRC).
I actually wrote an article on journalistic distrust which I wanted to share with you guys because I felt it was an interesting topic but when this whole topic started I decided to wait.
By the way, anyone who tells you "Gamergate" is about this or that specific thing is wrong. This is a difuse non-movement with who knows how many anonymous sides and it has no clear goal or politics.
