This is what I'd go with.
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (US version. Japanese version would be optional I think.)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
New Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii U
New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3d Land
Super Mario 3d World
That's what I consider to be the "main" series. Everything else falls under spinoffs for me. That's not to say they're bad. In fact most of them are spectacular, but this is how I see it.
The mainline Mario Bros games?

That's always bothered me because Mario Bros 2 USA has actually had a greater impact on the series than the original Mario Bros 2. I'd like to see the return of Wart and Mouser.Betagam7 wrote:Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) is perfectly canon. It just happens to be a

Re: The mainline Mario Bros games?
I remember asking about this before to someone Nintendo related or through someone who knew one awhile back. SMB1-4(World is called 4 in Japan) are considered the original main line of games and it stopped there.
The Land games were just the 2 games as the 3rd was like Yoshi's Island, a bastard child using the name of a franchise to sucker people into trying something new which were spinoffs of all those Wario Land titles (SML3, WL2-4, Wario Land VB) and SMW2(YI) into Yoshi's Story, Yoshi DS and the 3DS game.
The New SMB series they hailed as a return to the classic style, but they're NOT Super Mario Bros, which is why they didn't call it SMB5 or SM...whatever: SMB5. They don't play the same, the physics aren't right, nor are the stage designs, similar but unique.
Then you have all the 3D games whether full 3D or 2D(ish) play on a 3D plane for the N64/DS/3DS/Wii/WiiU and all those are their own thing too.
I'm with flake too, it has really bothered me over the years that Wart and his crew of fools never made a come back as they're fairly more interesting than the koopa kids and daddy.

Re: The mainline Mario Bros games?
I would count only the mainline platformers series, both 2D and 3D.
Stuff like Mario vs Donkey Kong, the Yoshi games and the Wario Land games I wouldn't count, despite them all being spin offs (and the first Yoshi and Wario games having 'Mario' in their titles' as I feel they've developed and spun out into their own respective franchises instead. If you did want to count Wario Land and Yoshi's Island I wouldn't go beyond the first - after that point they ditch the Mario moniker and become their own thing.
I also wouldn't count any updated releases such as Super Mario Deluxe, Super Mario All-Stars or the Super Mario Advance games as essential.
My list would be:
Super Mario Bros (NES)
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels (Famicom)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Super Mario Land (GB)
Super Mario Land 2 (GB)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)
Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U)
New Super Luigi U (debatable, but essentially just more of the previous game) (Wii U)
Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)

Re: The mainline Mario Bros games?
The consensus seems to be that it's okay to transition from 2D to 3D at Mario 64 but I'm not sure what makes that acceptable whereas Mario and Luigi or Super Princess Peach are not on anyone's lists.
I kind of feel like there aren't any strong thematic ties between the 2D entries and 3D entries save for the big budget, marquee appeal of many of the games.
So:
2D continuity: Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 1-3, Lost Levels, Land 1+2, World, New, New Wii, New WiiU, New Luigi
Mario 64 continuity: Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1+2, 3D Land, 3D World
with other headings for Sports, Yoshi, Wario, Luigi, RPG, and Paper.

If you're going to say that the 3D Mario games are a different series to the 2D ones, then I assume you would say the same for other major series transition into 3D aswell. Ocarina of Time is a different subseries of Zelda to A Link to the Past, Metroid Prime isn't part of the same series as Metroid Fusion etc?
Super Princess Peach is a spin off in the same vein as Wario Land or Yoshi's Island, hence it not being included on my list.
Mario & Luigi is also a spin off series, being a turn based RPG and all.
If you just want to stick to 2D Mario games, thats fine, but it seems pretty clear that Nintendo count the 3D games as part of the core series along with the 2D ones (they're all included in the list of Mario games in the art book of the 25th Anniversery All-stars release for example).
Re: The mainline Mario Bros games?
But that's what I'm trying to figure out - common strings to define what the core Super Mario Bros experience is. Is it gameplay? If that's the case, then certainly we can't include 3D platformers in the same vein as 2D sidescrollers. Is it thematic? Then what theme? If it's the plot of Mario saving the Princess, then Mario Bros 2, 3D World, and Land 2 are out. If it's Mario and Luigi just jumping around, then 64 and Sunshine wouldn't make the cut.alienjesus wrote:

Re: The mainline Mario Bros games?
I think if you're talking "Mario Bros." games those are games where you can play as the brothers that are still platformers of some kind.
Yoshi's Island is a spinoff, so are the Mario Land games. And New Super Luigi U is a Mario-less affair.
Technically, there's two Mario Bros. series', the original which has six games and the New series which has five games, where one is essentially an expansion.
Core Mario series, however, is something else entirely. That's just all major Mario games and you may or may not include Donkey Kong (That's probably up to personal taste). Which includes the ones above, but also the action-adventure, Lands, and 3D series'.
If you're interested in playing "Mario Series", then a fundamental cut off point might be if Mario isn't a main character in the game. The only place where you're kind of on the edge are the Yoshi Island games. I would think that, the first, and New, would count.
But, if you're goal is to just play fun Mario games. Then just go for it. Play all the main line Mario games:
I would add Yoshi's Island, even though technically it's not included, just because it's buckets of fun.
