I am so damn sick of that confusing naming trend.
They could call it DOOM ONE.

My fave single-player FPSs of the last gen would probably be:

Borderlands 2 (though technically a hybrid FPS/RPG)
Metro 2033
Resistance 3
Killzone 3
Far Cry 2
Halo Reach
FEAR 2
Bioshock/Bioshock Infinite

Some of these will have some of the stuff you don't care for, but they are all solid titles and among the best ever made in the genre. It's my favorite genre and I play the vast majority of games that come out for it, so hopefully that's a helpful list.

Upon further review, I do have an actual suggestion. Play Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Its awesomeness will override any of the qualms mentioned.

Which generation is Half-Life 2 considered? Just play that. :D

You might like Crysis 1. Though I believe it has regenerating health (I don't actually remember). It's very open to how you do everything. Almost all reviews I saw from the time complained the game was linear pop and shoot fest ... but I think those people playing were just unimaginative. The game doesn't tell you how to play. It just gives you a tool box and lets you loose.

It is Point A to Point B design. But it's a jungle, not hallways. And each combat scenario can be handled however you like.

I'll give an example:
At the beginning of the game, there's an area you reach overlooking a small encampment of soldiers with a lagoon of sorts.

Most people, from my understanding ... just ... walked down the path and started shooting people. Playing it like any other FPS. They forced themselves into a play style.

The first time I played that area. I used stealth.
I snuck down to the lagoon, which also gave me an opportunity to scout the soldiers.
I then swam into it behind a very large rock in the middle of the lagoon. Took out the soldiers on the patrol boat. Took the boat ... stayed in camo mode (which makes you virtually invisible) floated up to the dock. The soldiers around became very curious that this unmanned boat rolled up, they all started approaching ... and that's when I opened up with the mounted machine gun.

Much more satisfying than popping up and shooting.

Even going through with strength on grabbing soldiers and throwing them into each other would be more entertaining.

The game gives a solid playground ... as long as you can actually realize what's there.
A little further in the game, I did encounter scenarios that gave less freedom in how you could attack the situation, but that's up to play style. (there's was some minefield section I didn't care for)

I agree that regenerating health isn't exactly awesome in FPS' ... but health packs were even worse. Most games didn't remotely measure where those things should be placed, and they'd combine with the checkpoint system to make some exceedingly aggravating situations. (I'm looking at you Medal of Honor Allied Assault)

Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon is a must, hands down.

I second both Borderlands and all three Bioshock releases.

Two games I really liked were Singularity and Syndicate.

Well, I'm generally opposed to stories interrupting my gaming experience (which is why I'll probably never play Half-Life 2), but Wolfenstein seemed like a really fun game.
And boy, am I excited for the new Doom. Hopefully it doesn't end up like the modern Crap of Doody games.

The Halo Anniversary remake is pretty good, IMO.

I have seen a few videos for the new Serious Sam, and am on the fence about getting it.

I think Arma III is now at the stage of ample maturity, thanks to community addons and scripts. Fire up the editor and create your own sandbox battles. Footsoldiers vs armour, Wanzers vs helicopters, snipers vs snipers etc and someday they'll release dinosaurs and Terminators too. Shame that Battlefield after BF2 denied users any modding tools.

That's all I have to say. I've kept my FPS experiences to pre-2007 in the pattern of the games I've been buying, it looks like. A lot of the stuff you don't want isn't in those games.

Ha, my experience in that game is finding health when I didn't need it, and nothing when I did. The checkpoints were brutal too.
