If we are getting really obscure, Im voting for Tomba, thats a neat game, one of the first PSX games I ever got.
well, imo I would.
I understand where your coming from, but I really enjoy Atlus's Trap Gunner gameplay. Besides Spy Vs Spy series, there is no other game that compares to Trap Gunner.

Strider 2(japan only, maybe europe)
Parappa The Rappa
Wild Arms
Tenchu
Tenchu 2(just for the map editor)
Ehrgeiz(not sure if this requires dualshock -- think it might)
WWF Smackdown 2
Digimon
Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster
Twisted Metal 2
Tomba(not sure if this requires dualshock)
Do NOT get a modded PS2 for playing PSX backups. It is extremely inconvenient -- the PS2 has a very picky laser and will die very quickly unless you use quality media(you likely won't be able to get quality media unless you order it online -- hence the problem).
Most PSX games you buy will be scratched to hell, just so you know. You should either buy a chip or a swap disk if you don't have soldering skills. Either one would cost you $20 including shipping from most sites and would allow you to play all region games, as well.
It's definitely one of the best investments you can make due to the abundance of games in the PSX library, ease of getting them online(especially lately) and cheap cost of CD-R media.

just to mention the ps2 with reasonable media is not to bad as psx backups are direct copies 99.99% of the time and dont work it as hard as ps2 cdr dvdrips, plus most cdr media is good nowdays, its not like back in the day, but i would stick to verb or tayo yerdin or howerver its spelt if you want the best (plus its dvdr backups which really seem to punnish the laser they seem to stop way before the cdr media). And as far as i know the black media is no better or worse for the laser although some claim it to be quiter.... i think each drive prefers a different media, my ps2 lovers verbs and my mates loves cheap crud.... his did go pop and mine is still going tho

neither the ps2 or psx have great lasers but the psx is much cheaper to repalce if it goes bang. Get and old grey one which is not a 9000 and you can stick in an action replay or vcd card
The psx is so cheap and easy to mod you might as well have both and keep the old dog alive.#
back on topic,
einhander
ff tactics (and i dont even like rpg's)
klona
gran turismo 1 / 2
ridge racer revolution (or others i just like this one)
tekken 3 (on arcade as well)
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
was never really into the psx (when it was out) so not got a great knowledge of the more obscure titles but they are my western favs

Actually I have a HD attached to my PS2 to reduce the lazer strain when I play it. PSX games dont really seem to bother my system as I havent had a problem yet. So yeah.....

Einhander seems a promising shooter and Klonoa and Strider 2 good platformers... There's a bunch of RPGs but it seems that (leaving FFs outside) Xenogears would be the more unique one; as for FF Tactics, there's a GBA version I think so I'll leave it for now.
Hopefully one day I will have time to play all of these!
EDIT: typical, no PAL release. Maybe Vagrant Story then.
Ivo.
The GBA edition of Final Fantasy tactics may share the same name but they are not the same game.

I hate the GBA Version. The stupid Referee kept making swords Illegal. WTF? I had a whole group of knights......
Many US only games!

Many of the games that were suggested here don't have PAL releases! Chrono Cross (and I particularly want to play it as I really liked CT), Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears...
In any case I didn't end up getting Vagrant Story (at least, not yet) and I am just pondering if I shouldn't just follow the advice (of Turkey in page 1) and get my PS1 modded to run CD-Rs (is it like the Saturn that you can patch CD-Rs from NTSC-J / U to run in PAL?), as opposed to waiting ages to get a PS2 when its not current gen anymore and get THAT modded (or worse, waiting for PS3 not being current gen and THEN modding that. Or if the PS4 is backwards compatible... Erm you get the picture).
I have no idea on how to do it though... Get a chip and install it, like the Saturn?
Or maybe just emulate... I hear there's good ways to do it in PCs (unlike the Saturn, and probably better emus for PS1 than for DC)

Even though it was just re-released on the PSP, I'd say Valkyrie Profile. I love that game. I just completed the A' ending and after all that, I think this is going up as number 3 in my all time favorite RPG's.

the psx is region free once chipped for copies and originals. Just remember to use a scart lead if you play ntsc games or they will be in black and white. Its just like the saturn only the chip wont come on a pcb, its just a regular chip that you solder wire to each leg and then to the board of the psx. Its pretty easy, if you have done a saturn you should be fine. I would advise to do the extra wires for the stealth mode as some of the later jap rpg's reguired it i believe.
