It might just be she hasn't hit her growth spurt yet. It is worth checking out though. Hopefully everything goes well and you will have some good news for us on Monday.

There are a lot of things that can stunt or inhibit growth, but if you think it is a matter of little somatotropic (growth) hormone from the pituitary gland, then consult with an endocrinologist: they specialize in problems related to hormones. Good luck. Hopefully she has a growth spurt around the corner and there is nothing to worry about.

Frag Mortuus wrote:Thanks everyone, I appreciate all of your kind words. I'm trying not to worry, I'm actually more relieved that I have a physician that is listening to my concerns for once. Even if it turns out that she does have a hormone deficiency I won't stress too much as long as it doesn't have an immediate affect on her health. I'm fine with little imperfections as long as they don't risk my children's lives or overall well being. I had a lot of health problems as a small child and some continue into today, but they don't have much bearing on my overall quality of life so I'm fine with them.

We decided to postpone the tests until Monday because she isn't feeling well from having her shots yesterday and it is making her cranky. So, we are hoping she will be a bit more cooperative by then.

Thank you all again, I appreciate your support :D
Seeking any sort of medical care for a child is extremely stressful. I will be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, and I am glad you found a physician who will listen to your concerns.

Sucks to hear that man, but I wouldn't stress too much about it yet. At least you got a doctor that's taking your concern seriously.

Well after a few weeks, we finally get the results back from my daughter's blood work. Everything came back negative, so that is good. The only result we are waiting for is her bone density test. Which is the one that is the most concerning. The doctor said that she may just be a short person now and can hit a huge growth spurt at some point and shoot up.

On the flip side, my son had to have an emergency surgery. We took him to the ER because he had been sick and hadn't barely eaten anything in nearly a week and had stopped drinking. We were concerned that he was severely dehydrated. He had become lethargic and really weak. At the ER all of his tests came back negative. They tested for Mono, Strep, RSV, and the Flu. But, when they did a CT scan they noticed he had fluid on his tonsils, which would need removed. So, they ship him to a Children's Hospital via ambulance (about two hours away). The Pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor said he had an abscess in his right tonsil and that he is going to operate immediately. Once they brought him back to the room (after the surgery), they said his tonsil wasn't the problem wasn't the issue. But, instead he had an abscess in his throat, which means he had a large pocket of puss in his throat. They drained it and put him on a liquid only diet for a week. The doctor said that had we waited another 12 hours or so to get him treatment that his throat would have swelled to the point where it would have shut off his airway.

Pretty stressful stuff, lol. But, everything is ok now. They originally expected us to be there an additional 3 days, but he bounced back so quickly they discharged us the next day.

Sounds like your kids are lucky to have such observant and attentive parents. Let us know how your daughter's test turns out!

Is there any bowing in the legs?

My sister has rickets and our family couldn't figure it out until grade school, so she's done a LOT (to say the least) since then but is fairly short. I'm not sure if that fits the bill but maybe look into it a bit.

Best of luck man, hopefully you get answers asap!

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to update you all since so many people on here seemed genuinely interested and concerned for my daughter, which I am incredibly humbled by. Thank you all for that.

We got the results from her X-ray to check her bone age density and it turns out that at four and a half years old, she has the bone density of a 2 year old. So, we have to see a Pediatric Endocrinologist. We haven't gotten a word yet on when her appointment will be, but hopefully soon. In my worried and panicked mind I started to run down what could cause a immature bone density and osteoporosis automatically came to mind because it runs rampant in my wife's family. All of the women in her family has it and she has a calcium deficiency which she has to take medicine for (which is also a precursor to osteoporosis). So, Google informed me that it is unusual for a young child to have it, but it's not super rare or impossible. So, that sucks.....

On other health and development fronts, my son is not progressing as expected with his speech. He only uses one word (mama), when he should be using 10 or more by this point. Our pediatrician wants to continue to work with him on our own. But, if we don't see much progression over the next couple of months we are going to have his hearing checked and start work with a speech therapist. Not, to mention that he had a staph infection in his throat which made him have to get an emergency tonsillectomy. The surgeon informed us that within another 24 hours the swelling in his throat would have cut off his airway and could have made him suffocate, most likely in his sleep because he had been sleeping so much while being sick. So, we dodged a major bullet on that one.

Lastly, my wife was shopping on 7/3 and passed out in the checkout line and hit her head on the conveyor. The clerk called me after my wife woke up and asked me if I wanted to have her sent to the hospital in an ambulance, which I said yes. So, when she got to the hospital where I work the EMT said that her blood pressure had dropped to 83/20, which caused her to pass out. After four hours in the ER, they couldn't get it to raise above 95/50. She has a couple infections (Strep Throught and something else), but neither of them should have caused a drop in her blood pressure, in fact infections will usually make your BP raise a little. So, she has to follow up with our regular doctor to do some tests.

So far I seem to be the only one that is 100%. I don't know why everyone in my family seems to be getting really ill this year. But, it will pass eventually (I hope). Thanks for letting me air my frustrations and worries :|
