That's the level select code for The Lost World on PlayStation, for instance.
Same here. EECJJ is the code for the second to last level in Bubble Bobble on the NES.

I occasionally did hand write maps, but they've long been lost.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to find a ragged Phantasy Star II hintbook at a thrift store just as I was starting the game. I wore that thing out.

Am I the only one who thought of porn mags when clicking this thread? I threw those out once broadband came along.

Ha ha yes. When I was a kid I had lots of secret dirty books, but they had nothing to do with cheat codes. I always thought cheat codes were for wusses. I still do.

There's always a couple you remember.

Other than the obvious Konami code, I still remember the Sonic 1 level select cheat (up, down, left, right, hold a + start) and the character renaming code from golden sun (select, select, select, up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right, up, right, down, left, up, select) and one or two others (I remember a few cheat codes for Jedi Knight 2, but not what they do)

I had a couple different notebooks that I had codes, boss strategies, etc. None of them are around today.

Speaking of remembering codes, this one never left me. NTHGTHDGDCRTDTRK. Or Wompa_Stompa.

So, is someone going to post pics of these said notebooks/scribbles/scriptures/scrolls and other archaic writings of the retro game world?

Took me a little while, but I did manage to find my Shining in the Darkness map :D (it's kind of big so I'll just leave a link...)

It's a looks a little odd, but I didn't know how wide the dungeon was going to be so I used numbers to show where the path continues when I ran out of space. It's not complete yet, but I haven't beaten the game quite yet so hopefully I'll get around to it again haha Also, on the side, I have written a few items down and what they do because the shop doesn't tell you :l

I only wrote down 4 things regarding games while I was a kid:

1) Kirby's Dream Land 2
You have to combine the fish buddy with the electricity power up, to get a light bulb attack. There was a dark room where you had to use that to destroy some blocks in the middle and "read" the icons hidden behind them. Each icon represented a power up. Then at a later part of the stage you were constantly given a choice of power ups and you had to choose the correct ones in order to get the final rainbow drop.

So anyway, I noted down that sequence of power ups on the back of the manual

2) Sonic 2

When I was a kid I was a wuss and couldn't beat Mecha Sonic on the death egg. I would only hit him with a spin dash when he would be moving while not in ball form. Today I just pound him while he's standing and I finish him off in like 25-30 seconds.

Anyway, since I wasn't good enough back then to jump into his face while not hitting the spikes on his back, I had written down on paper his entire attack pattern till I got an 8th hit.

3) Toy Story on the Mega Drive

I just noted down the level select codes.

The weird thing is that I never bothered writing down Megaman Willy's Revenge codes down. I just always expected myself to be able to remember them. That or I was too lazy to make a grid :P

That's........ beautiful.

I need to play that game again.

Wish I could show some of my old notes/maps, but they were all tossed out 15+ years ago.
