Great pick, really enjoy this one in short bursts. Really nice in-game sounds, nice (diverse) ship selection - really cool color palette and a ton of scoring potential. These old school boss fights are tough, such big long bullets and slow ships (compared to current gen stuff).

First Run:
892,700 - mjmjr25 - Stage 3 - Nico135 - MVS

Nowhere near my high so no pic yet, but def am shooting for 2mil.

Second Run:
624,970 - fvgazi - Stage 3 - Green Ship (I forgot the name) - Mame32

My first run was on keyboard, which was considerably more difficult for that special shot. I don't know the scoring in this game, but it reminds me of donkey kong country with the 'lucky' collection. I'm getting the feeling I should be letting enemies crowd the screen and then use the super shot to chain them?

Stage 1 was a huge tease. I was able to get an A rank. It's been a while since I've been shmupping on a regular basis and this got my confidence up waaaaay to quickly.

Blazing Star has always been a favorite of mine. I've been playing it since 1999. I never really paid much attention to the score side of things, but I loved the intro, the graphics and music, and just everything about it. I'd have to agree that it still has a lot of old school charm but a lot of good modern touches like scoring mechanics. When I did the research for the writeup and after my first few runs, I saw that there was a lot more to the scoring than I originally thought.

Got the A grade on the first 2 stages, then proceeded to lose all 3 lives a minute into Stage 3. So much debris and bullets to deal with. There's more to this game than one would think. Love it!

To answer your question fvgazi, it's best to wait for more enemies to make the screen. There are plenty of opportunities to do so in Stage 1 and 2. Anticipate when they arrive so you can have a fully charged shot ready (when you see the word DANGER, it's a good chance to see many smaller enemies.) Also, try not to break the charge shot unless absolutely necessary.

Wow this is the shmup of the month? I literally bought the MVS cart last week without even knowing! Leaving on a ski trip tommorow for a week but I'm def gonna give it a go when I get back, might practice a bit on my neo geo emulator on my psp while on holiday.

My first thoughts on this one is Bonus! BBBBBbonus!

Where you going skiing at?

Exed - yeah, tons of scoring...tons. Best to let a few enemies roll past to charge up your shot fully for the nice stretches of popcorn. There are a couple spots on stage 1 and 2 where it baits you into using a charge shot, then it expires, then it throws a ton of easy popcorn at you and your faced with tap shooting them, or letting 2 whole chains go off screen while you recharge.

I like Aetrulyus (sp), because his multiplier is so easy to use and he's a beast on bosses - BUT, you have to have everything memorized so well because you his shot only extends 15% of the screen, so you need to be literally (Luke?) on top of the enemies.

Also, a lot of the larger enemies shoot cancel-able bullets - so learn which ones they are and don't kill them right away. Like most good scoring games, the more you try to score, the more danger you create for yourself.

Really like this one - good pick.
