The first two star ocean games got pretty decent remakes on the PSP and an international version of the newest one is also available for PS3.

Another series which I have been really meaning to play is the Yakuza series I have heard some pretty good things about it so far.

Alright I'll give you colors and generations, I just forgot about them because playing Secret Rings and the Black Night was like taking the MIB neuralyzer. I'll look into the Star Ocean games, and maybe I could do a castlevania 2D run, though all I remember from playing the NES ones is breaking two different controllers and that stairs are dumb.

Hey, Star Ocean 3 is an awesome game with an exceptionally lame story. The story doesn't matter though, you spend all your time fighting, exploring, and listening to awesome music.

The Valkyrie Profile series should be fun to run through since there are only three games. Savor them, or at least the first two.

For old-school action games, I recommend the Shinobi series, the Assault Suits series, and the Fortified Zone series.

If you want a more sickening challenge, try the whole Fire Emblem series. Or the whole Romance of the Three Kingdoms series.

DRAGON QUEST
Just don't expect them to become great games until you hit the third one... but if you've beaten the Final Fantasies, you know the drill. :P

Castlevania's a good pick too!

If you're feeling absolutely insane and masochistic: Megami Tensei

Yes I know the drill quite well, get drunk, pretend the early ones aren't that bad, then forget them completely because the later games are great :D . But I have played Dragon Quest 3, 8, and Dragon Warrior I & II which I believe are were called Dragons Quest in Japan but not here for some reason. I really wasn't a big fan of any of them, but if there is one that you think I should play out of the entire series let me know and I will definitely check it out.

SHINOBI III IS AWESOME. So is Valkyrie Profile, I just don't own valkyrie profile, but I used to play the first one at my cousins house when I was younger, loved it so much. Just haven't gotten around to dropping some money on it.

I've nver heard of Assault Suits or Fortified Zone, I had to look them up on wikipedia and it doesn't really say what the games are about.

And yes I love Fire Emblem, I've beaten Fire Emblem(GBA first one released in US), Sacred Stones, Awakening, and Shadow Dragon. I keep saying I am going to get Path of Radience and Radiant Dawn but I still haven't yet, it's on the list with valkyrie profile.

So you have my interest here, because I only own the Snes game, I think it's Ys III. I have never played it though, in fact when I was going through my collection yesterday I saw it and was wondering wth it was, but I was busy so I didn't pop it in to check it out. Can you toss me some more info on these games, wikipedia is being very unhelpful.

BTW is anyone here currently playing through a specific series of games? I'd love to hear what they are and how your experience is going!

Looks sweet, I run Linux on a Chromebook though, I haven't gotten steam on it yet. I know Steam has Linux games now so I guess I'll have to check back into Steam, kind of been off PC gaming for a few years now.

There are a couple exceptions, but the vast majority are top-down action RPGs. The earliest games don't have an animated sword or attack button, instead it's a "bump" battle system like Hydlide.

The games are fast-paced, stream-lined, and tons of fun. The series is known for its soundtracks, which are insanely good:

These are the games:

Ys I
Ys II
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Ys V: Ushinawareta Suna no Miyako Kefin
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (the "VI" is dropped in the American title)
Ys Seven
Ys Origin
Ys Strategy

- The Oath in Felghana is a full-blown remake of Ys III. The original Ys III is sidescrolling like Zelda II, The Oath in Felghana is top-down like most of the other the Ys titles.
- There are three different "Ys IV" games. For whatever reason, Falcom allowed Tonkin House and Hudson to both create an Ys game in the 1990s. Both companies called their game "Ys IV". Just recently, Falcom developed their own version of Ys IV - this is Memories of Celceta which was just released.

Seriously, you need to play these games.

I'm going to suggest a series that I expect no one else will mention: Fable.

Fable: The Lost Chapters - Xbox
Fable II - Xbox 360
Fable III - Xbox 360

Check 'em out.

The first game will soon be getting an hd remake on the 360 called Fable Anniversary, fyi.
