PlanetSide. PlanetSide 2 is garbage.
I also had a ton of fun with Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Enemy Territory back in the day. I played it to death. Was definitely in there from the early to mid 00s, although I'm not positive on dates. Counter-Strike was good times, but I had so much more fun with RtCW/Enemy Territory.
Quake 3 Arena, enough said.
WarCraft II. Many prefer StarCraft or WarCraft III, but WC II hands down holds my most memorable online RTS experiences. It's also just my favorite PC games period.

Just to cover everything, I wish it was common practice for a company/studio to release the server code upon a game's official online discontinuation so private servers could be made, if people wanted them. Wouldn't that be great? Imagine how much of gaming's history could be preserved this way!

I couldn't agree more. Games like EverQuest: Online Adventures on the PS2 just recently closed their doors earlier this year despite an outcry from fans to at least get the server code. That game is lost to time and will NEVER be seen again unless someone inside of the company leaks it.lisalover1 wrote:Just to cover everything, I wish it was common practice for a company/studio to release the server code upon a game's official online discontinuation so private servers could be made, if people wanted them. There was a great Text-Based MUD that was being done in the early 2000's for AoL that used sound and had a GUI and it was an amazing game that was lost to time. I had never played anything like it and to this day, no MUD has ever been able to emulate the sheer depth the game made.

Re: Multi-Player Modes You Wish Were Alive
I played some Battlefront 2 on PC not so long ago. It has decent support, though a lot of people were playing in "heroes" only TDM which was amusing but not really what I wanted to do. Too many lightsabres flying about.
I think Battlefield 2 still has decent support, I know people who still prefer it over its sequels. Here's a vid on the issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTARy1xgAZM

I have the Warcraft II Battle.net edition amongst the other three games that game before it. I'm pretty sure you can still go online with Warcraft II and do LAN games as well.brunoafh wrote: WarCraft II. As for Wolfenstein, it was really an introduction to some larger sandbox-types of modes. There were still deathmatches, but the pace of the game was varying depending on the map. There were a few principles that made it work.
1. Objective modes were time based, not ticket/reinforcement based.
2. Greatly designed maps with multiple choke points. There was strategy involved in order to be successful. With the advent of voice chat on consoles, it made for a good way to make things work.
3. Classes with different loadouts that are highly effective. Engineers that are the only class to breach walls with dynamite, Medics to Revive fallen teammates and pass out health, Lieutenants to call in Airstrikes/Artillery and pass out ammo, Snipers for sniping, and Soldiers for varying weaponry and increased health.
This was my favorite map, and it was almost always a great time. (Edit, the guy in the video is horrible at the game.)
Overall, there was a lot of depth and some good polish. Eventually you got some exploitation of some maps, but games were usually quite exciting and offered lots of different counters to strategies.

Ah, the beach, probably the most-played of all of RtCW. I remember spending a lot of time chucking airstrikes down on Allied Engineers or sniping Nazi soldiers attempting to man the machineguns in the front bunker. If I recall correctly, just about every map required an engineer on at least one of the teams, though generally the Nazis were defending while the Allies attacked, or both operated on the same setup.
I really miss that game.

Oh hell yes, the Beach was the best map no question. I would say like 80% or more of my playtime before Enemy Territory came out was spent on that map. I always had the most fun as Allied infantry trying to storm through the bunkers/trenches. The best spot was if you were able to get through the main gate and go through the trenches to the left and up the stairway. You could always catch the Nazis with their pants down and be able to escape pretty safely at the same time.
Calling airstrikes was pretty hilarious too, but I always have more fun in the middle of stuff just ramboing it. My k/d ratio has never been particularly good in any FPS because of this.

This. I was there for opening day, and chatting in the lobby during those final hours. Great memories.Blu wrote: Phantasy Star Online - Even the servers that exist now don't do it justice, and it's hard (and rightfully so) to get into the game now when the appeal of the game has come and gone with the servers' shutdowns.

Team Fortress Classic. The amount of time many people have put into TF2 is what I did in TFC while a freshmen at college. I was literally putting 60+ hours a week for the most of the year in it. After freshmen year though I moved onto more social outings. Sadly TFC for the source engine, aka Fortress Forever, got cut down by Team Fortress 2, and has never really recovered. I dont mind TF2, it just didnt grab me like TFC. 24hrDustbowl, Sigtown, and 24hrBirthday (random map listing with the birthday modifier - damn helicopter in spawn), were some of the ones I remember playing.
Aliens Vs Predator Gold (though I will take 2) if I have to. Gold is just a solid game all around.
