Other great sandbox games... Red Dead Redemption, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Arma II for the mods like Takistan Life and DayZ, Arma III for its mods like Altis Life. Also check out Darklands (1992) for the PC...it is a great game.

Ah so you play ARMA3. But I'm not keen on it so far.. maybe in a year or two after some patching and more content.

Postal 2? If you're not scared about playing old games or bad graphics then Ultima 7 and Wing Commander: Privateer are possibly the greatest sandbox games of the 1990s (and not just that, but of all time), released way before GTA (1992&1993, a RPG and a space sim). Both can be bought for 6 dollars from GOG, but a boxed copy will cost you more.

Also check out Darklands (1992) for the PC...it is a great game.

You are correct in that assessment. Even though Altis Life is a blast on Arma III, Takistan Life in Arma II is far superior and much more refined. It is gonna take a long time before they get Arma IIIs bugs worked out and their graphics engine optimized.

Mount & Blade is a pretty solid WRPG sandbox game. My local Target sells it for $10.
