I'm with Bone in that I like collecting the systems almost as much as the games themselves. Especially the ones i've never owned/played before. I don't care how bad the games are, i'm always pretty enamored with any new piece of hardware I get.
If I like a system enough and it seems plausible, I go for a complete library, but I try to be thrifty with it. Otherwise I buy what I know i'll like, or if it's cheap enough - i'll try something new.

Re: Preference on Collecting?
Well, I have been a collector of games before and when my wife and I started having kids I ran out of storage space, had to give up my game room for a kids room, thought that I was being dumb by collecting games and sold HUNDREDS of games one year during a Steam sale and bought a few hundred dollars worth of games on there which translated to hundreds of games in my collection.
I'm an avid PC gamer and for a long while thought I was done with console gaming. Hence the reason why I wasn't as active on this site for a good stretch. However, I have recently rekindled my love for consoles and, of course regret my decision to sell my console games.
In the past few years I have sold off my 80+ collection of 360 games and the system. But, in my defense, the system was about to go out and I didn't want to shell out the money to buy another because I NEVER played it. Literally. It hadn't been turned on in about two years.
I've also sold my Vita, which I really regret. With my PS+ account I have amassed about 20 or so games for it. I will rebuy this system and when I do I will keep it.
I sold my PSP with TONS of games to get the Vita
I sold my Wii because I didn't play it.
I sold my GCN because I got the Wii and could just use my games on it.
I sold a HUGE collection of PS2 games, mostly on this website along with the PS2.
The other system include Dreamcast and Saturn, Nes, SNES, Genesis and others. At one time I had a pretty respectable collection. Do I regret selling it all? Absolutely. However, I have now decided what I want in a collection and plan to move forward with that in mind. If I start building it back up and decide to sell it, I want you all to talk me out of it.

Re: Preference on Collecting?
I just get stuff I think I'll like or that I want to play and systems or hardware that are needed. I don't really get rid of anything either. I've been burned, and I've seen a lot of people get burned, on getting rid of something they wish they kept.
Though, I don't have stockpiles of stuff either.

Re: Preference on Collecting?
I'm more of a console collector. I'll grab a handful of games and work my way up. I'm big on SEGA consoles right now (I started collecting because I was a Sonic fan) and replacing my loose carts with boxed copies. It helps to only have a few games in that instance.
Systems Owned: NES, Sega Genesis (Non-TMSS), Game Boy, Game Gear, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis (Model 2), PlayStation, N64, Sega Dreamcast, GBA SP, Xbox, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 3, PSP, Nintendo 3DS

This is basically how I am. I never sell or trade games unless they're duplicates.Cronozilla wrote:I don't really get rid of anything either. I've been burned, and I've seen a lot of people get burned, on getting rid of something they wish they kept.

But I also never acquire stuff that I don't really want.

I'm kind of like you two but I little more open with my purchases. If find a game at a thrift shop that don't know if I'll like and it's $15>, I'll buy it. It might turn out to be amazing or just poop but it's worth the risk to me.BoneSnapDeez wrote:This is basically how I am. Re: Preference on Collecting?
It's sort of a free for all for me right now, just finding anything "good" is hard for me so I snatch it up when I can. That being said...what I do collect is:
One of each console[not new gen/and with the box if I can] (Oh and I do mean each console...handhelds and consoles. I might not have every console but I am trying to get to that. So...like every Nintendo console, including the Famicom. I don't really want the PAL versions, just the JP versions)
All Nintendo Power mags[with posters would be great] (I have a few right now so I just need to fill in what I don't have)
Any gaming plush/figure/poster/sign I can find/get
And of course for the games themselves...every single game, CIB. A lot of work but I want it. So far my plans for this are, I buy the game by it's self (easier to find that way and cheaper), then go on ebay and find people selling off lots of empty boxes/cases/manuals and slowly piece them together.
Like right now I have maybe...15 NES boxes, 5 have manuals but none have games. Some lady gave them to me for free lol...so I thought why not keep them, find the games/manuals on ebay or in a yard sale? Then I'll have 15 CIB NES games! Freaking perfect plan if you ask me.
Now I have storage issues so this is all way way in the future. There's no way in hell I could fit the stuff I want in my room. So it's a plan for down the road...and when I have more cash lol.

Re: Preference on Collecting?
I enjoy collecting games as much as systems that I will enjoy playing. I'm not as much interested in collecting complete system sets but rather collect games in a series or I ultimately enjoy.

Re: Preference on Collecting?
The way I personally look at it, if its rare massive and hard to find i buy it. Kiosks(demo units) store display units. I collect all the games and systems I can find locally around ebay value or less.
