I have bounced through this feeling alot recently. Really ever since my wife and I got married and we bought a house. When packing up my collection I realized that there were many games that I do not care about, or even forgot I owned. This is true of boardgames aswell. Several years ago I started to pair down my DVDs and tapes, but that is a different conversation.
What I did decide to do though is pare down my collection to systems I really like, so Nintendo cartridge systems, Genesis, and PCengine. Then figure out the handful of games on each of the remaining systems I want to keep, then sell the rest. So while I enjoy several PSX games, the only ones I am keeping are Team Buddies, Chrono Cross, Jade Cocoon, and Pitfall 3d. I will play others via emulation, legit and none, but those are the ones I want to keep originals of because they are my favorite four.
Now my goal in retro collecting is two fold:
1. Games my family used to play growing up
2. Games that are considered good on the console that we might not have played - I will try the game before I buy it to make sure I like it.
So while we may not have played Rygar, I know it is a good game and own a copy, right next to Rush n Attack and River City Ransom.

I knew atleast one of those PSX RPGs I bought multiple copies of for cheap would be worth something. Now to dig out my two copies of it and see what condition they are in.
