dsheinem wrote: Sure, but importing a Japanese physical release fills the "rare" need in your OCD, so that makes sense. I've imported things for the same reason. By contrast, something like FF2 is sometimes like $4-$5 on the PSN, and you could sell your PSP copy for twice that. Something like Dead Island is often under $5 on Steam, yet you have it sitting on your shelf because...why? It's not like you wouldn't be able to pick up the physical version of these games for cheap later if you change your mind. Perhaps you can consider cheap digital versions a way to "try out" a game you aren't sure you'll love, and then if you fall in love with it buy a cheap physical copy to stick it on your shelf later. If you have the game on your shelf already, it is a way to get some profit from it without losing the right to play it.
I suppose I can see the point there, yeah. I think something like Dead Island is something I'd be alright with buying a cheap digital copy of to try out as opposed to say Darkstalkers Resurrection which no way in heck would I waste $ on a download when I knew a physical copy existed.

xeogred wrote:Haha, yeah it's pretty silly, but it honestly feels awesome taking one of those games off the shelf, beating it, and then putting it back up on "the other side". Makes me feel more accomplished than simply updating my backloggery or whatever.
I can see that. I'm a pretty visual person I guess, which probably is why I prefer seeing shelves of physical games to begin with.
But now it hit me I am running into a silly issue right now, but I'm considering rebuying a handful of things I own on the 360, for the PS3. Not for trophies, but just because I've hilariously started to favor the PS3 this year and am predicting it'll be the one this gen I care to keep out and keep going back to years from now. Kind of "transferring" everything over. Already did it with Vanquish which I barely touched on the 360, but want to give another shot... and now got DMC4 as well (though I'll argue I want that there since I got the HD collection on the PS3, for consistency sake and the controller). I'm thinking of getting SoTN for the 3rd time (have it on the PSX and XBLA). But yeah like I want to rebuy the Dead Space games, Mass Effect, and some of my other favorites... for no major reason other than maybe a silly excuse to replay them and experience them on a different console.
Yeah I've done the same thing with various consoles. And like you, I've actually replaced some PS3 games with 360 versions because I favor the controller. It *is* silly. At least we can both admit that.

Getting rid of the fat worked for me. Although selling stuff for other stuff I wanted more has left a few holes I need to feel again (Resident Evil 2 & 3). I still always say less is more. RE is my favorite non-arcade style game and I hate seeing the rest of the series alone on the shelf, yet I know I will not really play then. I have yet to get them back over a year latter.

One of my hardest choices was selling Giga Wing 2 for the Dreamcast. It's my favorite shmup and a top 5 game for sure. Now why did I sell it? I have the Naomi version and after I got it I have not touched the DC version since 2011. I gladly took the $60.

On the rare collection part, Mega Man X4 I hate you. I bought a mint Saturn copy for $35 shipped back in the day, and now I fear selling it even though I played it once in 3 years.

Of course I have nostalgia too, Mega Man 1 CIB and Mint. This is my childhood right here, so it would be the hardest to part with as it is a one owner I have had since the 80's and it is the only NES box that survived, somehow perfectly too. Yet sometimes the $200 that they go for on Ebay is tempting.

On the digital stuff. If I can not recoup the money invested I will never pay for them.

I do not know if I am proud or ashamed to admit that I own both 16-bit versions of Ballz 3D...

Haha.

I guess I'd argue, despite hardware limitations and all back then... that it's a lot more exciting and cooler to own both versions of Genesis and SNES stuff. The games always look a bit different with the Genesis sometimes having stronger colors and a different aspect ratio, and then of course there's the dramatic difference with their sound cards and the music in games that were on both.

Nowadays it's just the controller that makes the difference for the most part.

I have bounced through this feeling alot recently. Really ever since my wife and I got married and we bought a house. When packing up my collection I realized that there were many games that I do not care about, or even forgot I owned. This is true of boardgames aswell. Several years ago I started to pair down my DVDs and tapes, but that is a different conversation.

What I did decide to do though is pare down my collection to systems I really like, so Nintendo cartridge systems, Genesis, and PCengine. Then figure out the handful of games on each of the remaining systems I want to keep, then sell the rest. So while I enjoy several PSX games, the only ones I am keeping are Team Buddies, Chrono Cross, Jade Cocoon, and Pitfall 3d. I will play others via emulation, legit and none, but those are the ones I want to keep originals of because they are my favorite four.

Now my goal in retro collecting is two fold:
1. Games my family used to play growing up
2. Games that are considered good on the console that we might not have played - I will try the game before I buy it to make sure I like it.

So while we may not have played Rygar, I know it is a good game and own a copy, right next to Rush n Attack and River City Ransom.
BoneSnapDeez wrote:And not owning Tales of Destiny II (Tales of Eternia) has bugged me for ages as I own the rest of the North American releases. The price of the game is just too damn high.
I knew atleast one of those PSX RPGs I bought multiple copies of for cheap would be worth something. Now to dig out my two copies of it and see what condition they are in.

Well, owning between 300-400 JRPGs has it's own slew of problems, as I am quickly discovering - the damn things are extremely time-consuming. I'm an RPG fanatic and my collection is chock full of great DS, SNES, PS1, and PS2 role-players, but I don't think I'll ever find the time to play through upwards of 10,000 hours of gameplay, especially because of all the other games I have and want to enjoy. Worse, I keep buying new ones I don't have...

Bruce Campbell as Pitfall Harry. That was reason enough for me, but it was also the demo a friend of mine had on his PSX when he got it and was the main game was played on it for quite some time - since his other game was Critical Depth...

I will admit, when I worked with him it was a hard choice in what to get signed. Either Pitfall 3d or the PS2 Resident Evil 4 chainsaw controller. But I think I made the right choice:

I should add, that I dont sell controllers. I like having a bevy of odd accessories.
