Two of the big ones, for me in the 90's, were Mortal Kombat and Prince of Persia.
I'd give the SNES the edge over Prince of Persia. I seem to remember the graphics being a little more "crisp" and the gameplay flowed a bit better. Plus the SNES version had extra levels.
The whole Mortal Kombat thing was a big deal back in the day (at least for us). Being young teenage boys, we wanted blood dammit! So much so that we gave up our SNES console to buy a Genesis. Just for Mortal Kombat and the blood. So just for that reason alone, I'd give the edge to Genesis. Looking back though, both versions weren't that great. Then again, I've always been a Street Fighter guy anyways.

Oh, something else to consider: will the SNES be given an edge over the Genesis on fighting games due to the standard controllers? Because having to buy a separate six button controller to play a Genesis fighting game doesn't exactly endear it to me.

I feel that one's a bit of a toss up.

I have played neither of the Lion King games. As for Mortal Kombat there has to be tons of stuff about this on the net...
In the end, this is our list, so if you disagree with what is linked write something up and I will use that as the basis.

Get some screen shots and that prove this and I'll link it.

I personally agree. The 6 button Genesis is my favorite controller ever.
The controller and the speed should give the advantage to the Genesis/Mega Drive in all fighting and shump games.

Sure, but it's a shame that wasn't the original controller. The 3-button controller makes fighitng games nigh unplayable.
Might not be a bad idea to consider comparing peripherals, now that I think about it.

So we will just judge it on play, no matter what controller is used. So the speed, or lack of slowdown, should be enough to push the review if the ports are identical, not the 3 or 6 button controller.

I guess, but I think comparing control schemes isn't a bad idea.
Also, here's a couple of short videos on comparisons using fighting games:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSjugCjh0SI - Gameplay footage comparisons of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Super Street Fighter 2, and ClayFighter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcJs6wxdpsA = Comparison of Mortal Kombat 2. (declares SNES better)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9BOn-0hd_Y = Comparison of Mortal Kombat 3. (declares a tie due to strengths in both versions)
The guy who did the MK videos also did a video for MK1, but I'm willing to bet we already know the winner.
Re: SNES and Genesis Port Comparison
I think it's a bit silly to disregard the fact that Sega officially released a controller almost specifically for 6-button fighting games, with a more comfortable layout, and the best d-pad of the generation to boot. I agree with spacebooger that it's ultimately a matter of preference, and of little value to the comparisons.
Also, Mr Nutz is missing from the list. The Genesis version is PAL Mega Drive only.
Genesis: controls feel a bit tighter, music is a bit more fitting, slightly more consistent presentation (apple enemies are red instead of pink in the first two stages, red in the last three, stock five health instead of three with max 5, etc).
SNES: A bit more graphical detail, a couple extra graphical effects (boulder on game over screen) addition of some boss dialogue.
Overall: Probably a toss-up. Snes version looks a little nicer; Mega Drive version plays a bit more smoothly.
Also, shouldn't TG-16/PCE be a part of this also? I feel like the statute of limitations should be up by now on pretending NEC wasn't a part of the generation.

Agreed. It should really be a three-way comparison.
Arcus Odyssey is another game not on the list - though the SNES version is JPN-only.
Re: SNES and Genesis Port Comparison
Hook was also on Sega CD.

I'm going camping this weekend, and will add the new stuff when I come back.
I have no problem with TG-16, and we can make another subsection to this list or start a new thread.
Since more people have SNES and Genesis, I want to keep them separate then we can compare other ports like the SEGA CD section.
Ok, folks lets continue to grow this list.
