Thing that bothers me about the virtual console is that its bound to your system not an account. On the psn if you download a ps1 game you can put it on your psp, vita, and ps3. If something were to happen to my wii-u all the games I downloaded would just be lost. So for now I'll just stick to my homebrew channel on my wii.

Fair enough. What I enjoyed most was experiencing the game alongside others and seeing what everyone was saying. I want to reiterate that I'm not thinking of completely giving up PC emulation. Cranking the resolution up in PCSX2 and Dolphin is still amazing, as well as being able to play through fan translated games and other rom hacks.

Yes, while the situation with purchases on Wii U still isn't ideal, it's still better than how it was. Now there's at least a Nintendo Network ID that everything is tied to which will make it easier to recover things if something bad happens.

EDIT: Just seen that Mega Man X Collection for PS2 is $14 brand new on Amazon. That makes it hard to justify paying $7.99 for just the first game on the VC.

Ugh, can't decide what I should do here...

Bothers me as well.

The cold hard fact is that open emulation offers more value to the consumer than the game companies offer.
I mean, the music industry had to evolve; you can buy an MP3 and use it on pretty much ANYTHING. It's yours to enjoy however you see fit (more or less--> personal use).
That sort of freedom is unheard of in the kosher gaming world.
I hate this limited use nonsense.

I hope the whole thing is just still evolving and there's more value on the way than what we have now.

What good is the NNID if everything is still tied to the console?

You can call Nintendo up and have them transfer it all to a new console.

Still not ideal. You're no longer toast though if you lose your system.

The only real difference between a NNID and PSN at the moment is you can have your PSN active on two consoles (used to be 5, yay game sharing!), whereas the NNID is only active on 1 console. It would be nice if they would give you a way to deactivate your console either in the settings somewhere or via the web like Sony, but still better than it was for sure. They still need to fix the situation with the 3DS though, no arguments from me there.

I do think I'm leaning back towards sticking with how I've been doing things honestly. I guess I might pick up a certain VC games (Earthbound) here and there. I spend way too much money on games already to start splurging on digital versions of classics. Not to mention how much I've spent on USB adapters for various controller types as well as the controllers themselves.

I say use the VC for everything that's actually available on the VC and PC emulate everything else.

I think that once the Nintendo Network is actually completed for other devices like 3DS, you'll see games getting tied to accounts and not just hardware ids. But, it looks like the only got it read for Wii U launch, and the abstracted version will likely take longer.

But they've said that's their plan, there's not really a lot of reason to doubt them moving in that direction.

This thread has been extremely helpful, as I've been wondering if I should make the leap and get a Wii U for a few games + VC. I think I'm going to hold off for a while, as the 3DS has recently caught my attention as well. I also didn't know that your purchases were tied to the console, which is kind of a deal breaker for me. I can still emulate all of the games I can't obtain for the actual hardware.

I prefer emulation because you can fast forward (was so helpful on FF6) , save anywhere (frustration) , not having to deal with old hardware (working, damaged, setup) and I dont have to hook up 6 extra systems on my TV . 1 will do . My problem with emulation is that many games are never released because of some copyrights I do not understand (like golden eye on 64)

If Wii U will continue to release Virtual Console games on past generations like genesis and Neo GEO I will consider getting one (are they still releasing them for the Wii? ) but I am afraid with the Wii U they will only release past NINTENDO titles only (no genesis, neo-geo etc) .
