If memory serves ( and usually doesn't) the other port was the system link up port. I never bothered playing any games via system link and I guess noone else did either. Guess that's why they got rid of it.Mozgus wrote:Go with the final model of the fat PS1, SCPH-9001. Sony sure has a history of losing focus on the actual gaming and testing the waters on all sorts of unwanted abilities, and then subsequently abandoning them all. PS2 dropped the 56k modem and hard drive features, among other things, and PS3 has so far dropped a shit-ton of features. Nintendo rarely drops anything, but two huge ones come to mind: composite video on the NES Top Loader, and component video on the later Gamecube models.Droid party wrote:If memory serves ( and usually doesn't) the other port was the system link up port. I haven't really looked at the PS3 in any real depth because to be honest none of the games on it appeal to me at all, but that will change when MGS4 and GT5 come along. The idea of paying $700 for something that has no decent games for it was rediculous to start with, but now if I still want to enjoy my back catalogue of PS2 games I have to keep my PS2 hooked up too, which just adds to the huge clutter of consoles I already have.
I could care less about the smaller HDD, as far as I am aware it is just 2.5" sata drive that can be easily changed for something bigger. 60 or 40gig I would have swapped it out anyways so it doesn't bother me, but the lack of bc is a real kick in the nads.
So basically ,FUCK SONY! m'kay.

I've always thought that if I get in the market for a PS3 I'd want one of the early models with the PS2 parts in them. That's bound to not be that easy in the U.S. anyway (and you basically need to get a used one I think), but in Europe it's probably downright impossible as even the earliest models didn't have them.Droid party wrote:but now if I still want to enjoy my back catalogue of PS2 games I have to keep my PS2 hooked up too, which just adds to the huge clutter of consoles I already have.
Or does the elite model have those in again?
Well, back to the original topic for the moment, I've owned my PSX (the original Playstation) since it was new and it's still working just fine. Of course I never really used it again after I got my PS2 but I worked that little dog hard when it was the only Playstation option. I've heard stories of early PSX units crapping out but the only system with which I ever had problems was my Saturn in which the cart slot stopped working but I got that fixed for $15.
Maybe I didn't work my PSX as hard as some of you or maybe I just got lucky, but I found mine to be quite robust and long lived. I've probably worked my PS2 harder over the years and it's still plugging along fine though the CD tray seems to be opening slowly and with some effort. Anyone have any ideas on what to do about that?
On a related note, what type of light grease is okay to use on internal moving parts such as CD tray mechanisms? I wouldn't want to use any kind of grease that would attack the plastic or which would dry out too rapidly.

That has a table of all the versions available with their flaws/advantages listed.
If you can find a blue debugger PSX (fat one) those can play imports and copies without the need of a modchip. BUT they have the old plastic lens trough. It's the fact that the older consoles (the ones with the parallel port and direct video out) used a plastic trough where the lens ran that caused them to conk out after a while. The laser was located so close to the PSU that it warped the plastic and then during games the lens would wear down the plastic runners which, after a while caused the lens to be out of line to the CD and caused DRE's. I had a playstation since day of release in the UK. so mine has all the ports and is an amazing cd player (you can get proper component stereo direct out of the playstation without needing to connect to a TV.) but it only works when placed vertically. It eventually got so bad that it would only read copied (it was chipped as soon as the chip was available) games and not real ones. So i managed to get my hands on a mint condition psone in box a while ago to play my originals.
So yeah.. get as later version as possible. One way to tell if they're going to last is ask the seller (if you're buying on ebay) to take a pic of the playstation with the lid open. the laser should point towards 5 o'clock from the center. Or you could just check the serial. If you're out and about and find one but can't remember the serial numbers that is a good way to check.
BTW the most hard to find ones are the green debugger units. They also have the ability to play copies or imports without a modchip but have the newer drive assembly which makes them the best playstation to get (arguably better than the net yaroze (if you're interested on programming for it using the psx gnu compiler)). I've never seen one though.

I found a green PSX with two analog controllers, two memory cards, an aircraft controller, all the hookups and a couple games. Is that a good deal, is the little bit of extra money worth it for the green PS1? In essence with the green PS1 could i burn friends games and play them without a chip or anything else? thanksdevilmyarse wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation
