Video game music as, well, just music

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

A lot of the old LucasArts adventure games have fantastic music, too. The Dig, in particular, stands head and shoulders above the rest. You can download the sountrack quasi-legally off the intertron, too: http://soundtracks.mixnmojo.com/dig.htm

I've listened to Grim Fandango's countless times.

I played a remix from Streets of Rage 2 live NYE and people loved it. Nobody had any idea what it was, not a gamer in the crowd.

Earlier game music required lots of composition to make up for sonic quality and sound variety. The only tool they had was composition. I can only imagine what Yuzo Koshiro would do with more current equipment, his electronic dance music was light years ahead of its time back in the early 90's.

i personally always thought megaman/rockman 2 had the best music in a video game ever, but it's generally more of a rock sound than most video games with arguably great music. for some strange reason i like 8-bit music the best, which reminds me - does anyone know of any software for making chiptune music? and if it's possible to run it through a emulator on a computer?

There are some Gameboy sequencer's out there. There was quite a big scene at one point.

If you're really into old school audio creation, i urge you to get an Amiga and some sequencing software for it. The sound generation chips on those are beautiful.

Thanks, there's some there that I will like. Can I just grab them in one go or you want me to divide it across some days not to overload bandwidth or whatever?

I think there's a 5 download at once limit on the dedibox along with other "overload" safety features so don't worry about pulling them all.

Ok, got some tracks already :) Great stuff there.
I played many of those games on the Amiga, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Roland soundcards are actually similar in capacity to the Amiga (old Soundblasters and AdLibs certainly weren't).

While there are some great VG tracks, and fantastic examples of people composing well within limitations, there are certain confines that limit the effectiveness of VG music, even the best VG music, when examined strictly as music. Music's medium and purpose does dictate its form.
