Well, in the unpopular gaming opinions thread, one of mine was that there isn't a single good shmup on the Dreamcast... except Ikaruga, which kinda doesn't count. All the Dreamcast-era shmups play weird. Lots of "buzz" mechanic and arcane scoring systems (Psyvariar 2, Shikegami no Shiro 2) or just plain hard as hell (Gunbird 2) or both (Chaos Field). No Cave games either.

The Saturn, on the other hand, has Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga. Nuff said.

Shmups - Saturn
Fighters - Dreamcast

I only say this because I know of all the imports one can obtain as far as shmups go for the Saturn and because we got so many great arcade-perfect ports of the top fighting games of the time period on Dreamcast.

Not to say stuff like Giga Wing and Mars Matrix are terrible on the DC, and the Sega-made fighting games on the Saturn are not second-rate by any means.

I favor the Saturn just a touch more. For fighters it will be the DC all though im into Shmups more than fighters. So therefore the Saturn has the edge. Seems to me the quality of the shooters are better on the Saturn overall. Although with the recent Indie games support might make things interesting. For the price of a Dreamcast $30 and a Saturn at $40 no reason not to own both systems.
Curtsy when you walk by that Dreamcast

See here's my problem. Got the Saturn just for a quick flip and sell the thing. Lately want to keep the thing but American games are pricey and most of the 2d fighters or shooters I own on ps2, my modded xbox, and I own the dreamcast with all the fighters and shooters. I don't like rpgs and a friend is offering 80.00 for my stuff and i could use the cash. I just dont know what games are good anymore and alot of Saturgames don't hold up today.

No kidding. A vast swath of the Saturn Library is still in incredibly high demand today, and not just by collectors, but by players as well.

there's a ton of stuff on Saturn that is well worth it. Fighters and shmups aside, there's lots of puzzle games, platformers and racing games - all of which I think hold up great. I probably play Daytona and puzzle games on there just as much as fighters and shmups honestly.

Absolutely. And a lot of fantastic Saturn games have never been ported.
