Defiance, new sci-fi show, real sci-fi for a change

Invalid argument. It wasn't "SyFy" when BSG was airing.
No, that's my reasoning for why I'm not interested in watching Defiance.

Meh. I watched the pilot and it was okay, probably won't watch another episode though.

Ive downloaded the first two episodes, and after watching the first one just how this is my diagnosis:

This shit's gettin' canned pretty soon.

I know they're trying to show the diversity, with all the aliens but they burn way too much money/celluloid with these slow pans across alien rock bands and dance sequences. I laughed immediately when I saw a bit of Firefly peek through. At the very beginning the main alien girl says something like "My dad promises things will get better, but his words usually turns to shock-tar." Then several other characters uttered the same thing.

Sorry kiddos, Joss pulled off 'gorram' and other Chinese curses in his show, but it sounds very copycat-ish if you try it.

It's interesting, but it's like they tried to start too many intricate plot threads, like the pale kids hating regular kids, and the Pale couple scheming to get control of the mines, until - that is, when the decide to team up to save the town.... until they can resume their scheming, etc.

I'd be surprised if it lasts, but it could be pretty good.

It's sad that everyone doesn't want to give this show a real chance. That's basically telling SyFy that we don't want real sci-fi, we want them to continue to give us crappy reality T.V.

I'll admit it's not Star Trek TNG or Firefly level. But I thought it was damn good compared to other sci-fi on T.V. at the moment, and worth giving the show a bit a chance before writing it off.

Oh, it's not that I don't want them to continue quality programming. It's that when they started showing reality TV and changed their name to SyFy, I stopped supporting them because they had moved in that direction. So does it mean I will miss good science fiction shows in the process? Yes. But it also means I'm not going to support their reality shows, their wrestling shows(I don't mind these, but I don't think that a science fiction channel is the place for them, even if some of the stories occasionally might try for a science fiction theme or twist), etc. I'm telling SyFy I don't want them because they got away from science fiction in the first place.

I am actually trying to like it. And I still get some enjoyment from it. I will stop once it becomes too absurd.

Its not that I've not given it a chance. I'll still check it out for a few more episodes, but it just doesn't have me. It has oddly placed special effects (really? you had to 3D animate a guy fishtailing in an old chevy? it'd probably be cheaper to have the guy actually fishtail as you already have the physical car in your possession) and I can tell the main guy is trying his hardest to be Mal, but coming off more like the sheriff from Eureka.

They just need to try a little harder.

Yesterdays episode was pretty cool.
What do you guys think? A bit predictable & cliche, but I still liked it. For me this one of the most awesome shows I've seen in a while. Probably comes right after Breaking, Walking and Dexter. But you really have to love sci-fi.
