I'm on Carbuncle with both my username and character as "Nemoide" if anyone wants to track me down. Otherwise I'm just enjoying soloing for now and hoping to join up with a former classmate at some point. I've been slowly getting the hang of it.
One thing I found surprising is that the first mission I got sent me into an area filled with unreasonably high-level monsters. I guess to teach the lesson that not everything should be attacked on sight? A LESSON HAS BEEN LEARNED.

Yeah, check mobs first. Very high level stuff was added farther into some of the areas right around towns and things. There weren't many new areas added when the level cap went up (just the Abyssea zones really), so they had to pack in high level stuff somewhere. 
One thing with FFXI though, at least until some of the more recent content, activities are very focused. You won't really get XP by doing missions, or get money by getting XP, and so on. So where a lot of RPGs and even MMOs will see you picking up quests or doing story as you level, XI you kinda just grind mobs. At least it's a ton faster now.

Just ordered it off Amazon, thanks to a birthday gift. Will be firing this one up in the upcoming week. Will have to install it, etc.
