I actually enjoy playing shmups on the SNES.

What exactly does the West have to do with the topic? I thought the subject was the SNES "lacking" in shmups... whether or not shmups are being localized before/after seems irrelevant.

There were a lot of western developers as well. Not all SNES games were Japanese. Market trends outside of Japan will have an effect on non-Japanese developers who have those markets as their primary markets.

From my own personal experience I've prefer shmups on Genesis than the Snes.
Genesis barely have any slow down at all while the SNES is just un-bareable.
PSN- jacktsang05
WiiU- jacktsang05

I can respect that you enjoy UN Squadron (the first SNES shmup I played) and Super EDF (very underrated). Too bad Axelay, Gradius III or Space Megaforce don't do much for you. They'd all be my Top 5 right there.

Yeah, there are a lot of good shooters on the SNES.
And Space Megaforce/Super Aleste is one of my all-time favs. That and UN Squadron/Area 88.
If the OP doesn't like the audio, well, mute it and put on a CD or something. ;)

I have to agree with OP on this one...
I'm terrible at playing shmups, but I absolutely love them. For some reason I always tend to lean towards the Genesis/Mega Drive or PCE shmups. Evertime I play a SNES shooter I'm left feeling "meh...". Not sure what it is though. It seems like a mixture of the audio, visuals, and overall feel of the game. R-Type was one of my favorites on PCE, but Super R-Type just feels off.

Of course this is all a matter of opinion, and I have played some enjoyable shmups on SNES.

Nope, but I did look it up after reading Gunstar Green's post. Might give it a shot this weekend.

I want to point out I'm not trying to be bias, but it seems that the majority of shmups that I've played on SNES have not been enjoyable for me. I don't really play many RPGs on Sega consoles, but absolutely love the Phantasy Star series. It seems that each console has it's strong and weak points, but each has it's own gems.
